Well, I guess I'm the minority, I had fun and made money/orders. However, it was my first show, therefore I have no frame of reference, as Walter says.
I smoked that spice...it's laced with formaldihide (I say this really loud anytime I see it in the shops)....Kept me up for hours when I really just wanted to sleep...Taste like shit too... More expensive than good weed....wtf? This spice shit needs to go home.
Headshops in Germany earned a lot of money with that shit, youngsters being totally hooked because they didn't have proper connections to the real stuff... Tried it once, tasted like shit and made me feel sick. It got banned because of the rc they found in it, hope it never comes back!
Beware of the Kratom crap they are selling too, has Tramadol in it. Once ypu're hooked on Tramadol a heroin monkey is like a walk in the park...
I totally agree with the op, you guys over the pond have such a good scene, keep it clean!
Hey everyone ! - Howsit ! - Hey we really went to great lengths to bring an incredible show to the East Coast - There was incredible glassblowing ( that I felt was really representative of whats hot right now ) - There was also an huge number of other types of artists that were at the C.K. Wholesale Expo that have never done any of these shows before - IE: Alex Grey - Zane Kesey - Skate PHD - Jumbie Art - among many others ! - I came away from this show and thought it was a complete success - as a matter of fact I have never been to a show with this array and caliber of artists before !
In terms of the " spice " - It was very hard to distinguish which companies were coming to the show to sell spice - some of them had names that insinuated that they were selling incense / others insinuated hippy stuff and believe it or not others were insinuating that they were coming to sell glass -
now with that in mind it was very hard for us to distinguish who they were -
The bigger question for me though =
Who are we to judge what is good and what is bad for OUR industry / is it ok to do DABS in front of the Cannabis Cup building ??? - does that make OUR industry look bad ? as opposed to the every day Dutch citizen just smoking a cigarette laced with some cannabis ???
I bet that 9 out of 10 of the glass pipe makers out there have BENEFITED from the spice sales in the industry - think about the massive influx of revenue that happened in the industry when that stuff took off -
Yes I think it is terrible that head shops are just selling this stuff to anyone coming into the door - but when I used to sell pipes to stores they sold something called RUSH - it was a weird anomaly !! - Maybe it was ether but people inhaled it ! - also allot of them also sold these whip cream chargers that people were actually inhaling through balloons that the stores sold them - GO FIGURE - and that shit was really bad for you - it was actually nitrous oxide ! - WOW
The Glass speaks for itself and obviously the actual glass art has nothing to do with the spice - The reality is that there are people out there who own stores that need to keep their profits up so they can keep dumping more into inventory to generate revenue for a successful business model - There will always be fringe products here - Its the nature of this industry -
Come out to our next expo - it is in Santa Monica in May - This upcoming show will be much smaller than the Atlantic City Expo and it is in an incredible space - The Barker Hanger in Santa Monica - we are working on a few very special events here - it is a business to business show only ! ( Glass Artists are welcome ) Only 2 days -

Slinger - I thought that the show was great for you ? - We really went to great lengths to attract incredible artists in all mediums !! - I have had enormous feedback telling us that vendors did well in terms of volume of sales - Hey please get in touch with us and let us know how we can improve for Santa Monica !
srsly? you are saying that you couldn't prevent spice and salts at your own show? that's crazy, the rest of us can (as long as we aren't swayed by the cash). we got by just fine before that stuff. i think i'd rather learn from your history than your words.
tbs, you consistently try to go big and we need ambition in our industry. thanks for that. i think you have a unique ability to bring us up (or down) with your efforts jason. i look forward to seeing how the santa monica show goes, good luck!
I feel like we had a completely successful show in terms of turnout - there were thousands of people that attended ! The C.K. wholesale expo is about whats hot in todays specialty gift market - not just glass but every kind of item that these stores carry ! - We had an incredible array of products from Skateboards to Alex Grey artwork ! - Please take a second and come to Santa Monica to see what all the people were hyped about ! - We have an incredible flameoff planned thats gonna blow minds ! the show is May 11-12 at the Barker Hanger - West LA baby ! everyone will be staying at the ultra swank ( very affordable ) Loews Hotel in Santa Monica on the beach ! - This will be hella fun !
I just wanted to throw my 2 cents in here, since I really felt like this thread could use a little "damage control" if you will. I'm glad Jason showed up and posted as well. As has been said several times, these shows are for the industry, and not JUST glassblowers/collectors. I personally thought the results of the flame off were amazing. I think we should all do our part to help the CK shows. Even if you wern't happy with one of them, Jason Harris is the fucking man in this scene. hes sacrificed and worked hard to help this industry, and these artists. Granted hes not pumping out that beatiful glass anymore, he is still devoting his hard work and time to helping the scene. Whoever said Spice has fermaldahide and kratom has tramidol is wrong. They dont add prescription drugs to that stuff, although it is dangerous, and bad. I understand why people are upset that it was being sold alongside glass, but this show was not just about glass. As other people have noted, spice really helps sales of the shops that are buying the glass. And once again..there is ALWAYS someone who has some stupid dangerous shit for sale. I mean, How many of the people posting in this thread that are upset about the spice drink alcohol, or tobbacco? You have to be smart enough to be able to know what is safe, and what is not. No intelligent person will smoke spice without finding out what it is first, and i dont think any intelligent person would smoke it after finding out what it is either. I dont like the salts, or the spice. I dont think kids should be able to get it, but for the stupid people who think its worth trying - let them. Because i doubt anyone posting here bought or smoked any of that shit. We all need to work together, and support each other. These CK expos are a GREAT event, and I agree theres always things that need improved, but we need to support them, and Jason Harris, because Jason's company that is doing these shows cares about bringing glass the legitamate respect it deserves. He's obviously taking the time to stay on top of stuff, even forum posts like this. I agree the bathsalt and spice is bad, but it is also a good thing. Its making money, and supporting our scene. Its for stupid people, and just another fad. It too will pass, and will be replaced by some other stupid shit...so just spread the love, and do your part to help improve shows like CK.
It's also drawing a lot of negative attention to smoke shops.
Just ignore it, it's the price of business is like saying "We had this lovely juried arts show where everyone's made the glass, furniture, quilts, etc that's for sale, but just ignore Jimmy's Import Emporium's table over there selling the cheap plastic crap"
I don't make pipes so I don't really have a dog in this race, but to say 'we don't like it but we let it in anyway just because' when it's your show is just plain stupid. Is it really that hard to have a rule in place along the lines of "put up posters and signs if you want, but don't bring this stuff that's f'ing people up into the building"? That way if they really want to represent it, fine, but you're not at risk of token harassment by some bored vice cop. I mean really, it's like saying "We don't like cocaine dealers, but at least they're employing some people, so just lay off"
Yes, it wasn't just a glass show, but if there's one product in particular that's making negative news across the nation, maybe that's a good time say "hey, leave it at home, bring everything else".
^this.
I incinerated the spice i got at the the show. In my glass spice incinerator. runs on propane compressed air and spice.

I'll tell you who we are. We are the ones who want to respect, support and defend our industry by making informed, short and long term decisions. I do not want to use her up and throw her out when I'm done.
originally posted by Mr.POrnSome of those stupid people are kids. Matter of fact, last time I did Rush was 11th grade. Then those stupid people do stupid shit, like dying from it. By them being so fucking selfish and dying, it brings undo attention to our industry.Quote:

truly sincere,

Here here Boxfan you pretty much summed it all up in one post!
boxfan laying down the real talk.
repped!
In terms of individual freedom, I feel people should be able to buy that synth crap. But, it shouldn't be just because they can't buy non-toxic herbal non-alternatives. In the meantime, while our government weans itself from oppressing the citizens for profit regarding cannabis, I think good taste and responsibility dictates not being involved with 'spice' and certainly not 'bath salts' as they are not a safe product. Whether they're damaging for the pipe industry, hard to say since the pipe industry is already on thin ice federally.
well said boxfan
edited because I let my emotions overwhelm my restraint...
Jason Harris just called me NO LESS than 12 times in a row. First call, I let him know that I was putting up our tree and Jennifer has been throwing up with the flu almost a week. I had no interest in speaking to him until after the holidays about anything. I had to turn my ringers off, so I really don't know how many times he really called. I understand that Jason might have issue with what I posted, but it is no excuse for such a lack of professional manners.
Regardless forum shit should stay on the forum and personal shit should stay in a PM. I apologize for getting off topic, as it is one of the most important we have facing our industry.
