Glassified Trolling

This has been mentioned before, but it bears repeating: if you see a post that violates the TOS (terms of service - found here http://www.talkglass.com/forum/showt...rs-please-read ) or is generally uncalled for, you can give the poster an infraction or report the post.

How to, for anyone who doesn't already know:
There are three little icons at the bottom left corner of each post. The one that looks like a badge/star is for giving the poster a reputation point (ooo, I love those!). The one that looks like a couple of cards is for giving a user an infraction (I have not done that, but I assume you just click it and follow the directions). The last one that looks like a triangle with an exclamation point inside is the one to hit if you want to report a post. If you hit it, a form pops up and you leave a comment explaining what is wrong with the post, and a message goes out to all the mods. One of them will check it out and take action if necessary. If you see something bad, don't assume that a mod already knows about it or someone else has already reported it.

If you see that your comment was deleted but someone else's comment of the same caliber was allowed to stay, it could be that someone reported your comment and the mod didn't see the other one.

And, of course, there is always the option to just not report it so it stays up and other people can see what kind of ridiculous stuff gets posted. If your ridiculous stuff is deleted and all that remains is someone else being ridiculous, all the better.

Your pawn shop analogy is a good one. If I walked into a pawn shop, and saw a middle aged woman looking at a macbook (Noob, looking at equipmet) that was from 07 running a 1.6 and they were trying to gouge her in price, then yes I would say something. Even if it meant they asked me to leave afterwards.

One of the beautiful things about selling things in an open markteplace, is that sellers are held to a certain level of integrity, and if they aren't holding it up, can be called out on it.

I think asking too much for something is like asking for some one too butt in and say something ... the Pawn shop metaphor is on point as in ... Pawn Shops rape people and If some one is raping people then I feel like its good to say something. I tell people all the time about better deals and such. there are many things in this industry that are sold for way more than their worth.. Remember when china colored tube was 20.00 a lb? It takes people telling others ... "Hey you can get that stuff for 2.30 a lb from the right place." to keep the market value low..
This is a good way for us to protect others who don't know better from getting screwed by people that are trying to capitalize off of others lack of knowlege.. Some people are new to this and they don't know that Items are usually sold for a certain price ...
I see it like this There is no real reason to protect the rights of and individual who is trying to take advantage of someone else ... however there is a reason to educate the ignorant so that they are not taken advantage of ...
This is funny to me because Its not just about "Stacking Paper" Its about protecting the culture and the community. I read this and I see a bunch of butt-hurt people mad because they got called out on trying to make too much money ...
I know that my opinion may not mean much but I feel like protecting the rights of the profiteer is less important than protecting the rights of the community as a whole to protect its self from the Profiteer..

Would any of you buy a used car from a dealership without checking around some other dealers, and checking online, to see what the average market value of that car is? Its called due diligence, and its the buyers responsibility to do their homework on ANYTHING they buy, whether it be a house, a new or used car, GMO foods, a torch, or any other piece of equipment. If the buyer is willing to buy something without doing their own due dlligence, then they either have $$ to throw away and their time is worth more than the difference, or they need to learn a few lessons about how life really works. Its nobody's job to hold a noob's hand through their purchases to make sure they dont make a mistake.

Now if someone is posting a piece of equipment for way more than retail, that could be mentioned in the thread, or politely via pm to the seller (if you want to buy it) or via pm to prospective buyers that have shown interest in the thread.

Plenty of reasons it can't be a "rule" but there's NO reason not to be respectful to the business transaction taking place. If questions need to be asked, ask respectfully. That's all I ask. Otherwise I'm going to delete your post, which I hate doing. Please don't make me delete posts!! ;)

I guess I'm not sure what you mean. Basically what I'm saying is, this site is here for people to use freely, and there is very little asked in return (money not being one of those things). Be civil, abide by the TOS, try to keep personal arguments to PM's and not let them spill out into the forum, if you have an issue with a moderators decision, contact them via PM, etc... It's not a lot to ask.

Personally I'd rather not edit anything at all, but things can occasionally get out of hand, and I've seen what happens to forums that don't moderate at all. They get filled with spam, infights, assholes yelling everyone else down. It's not pretty. The moderators aren't here because we're stacking paper. We do this for free cause we love this place. The fact that we spend time moderating on here actually impedes our ability to stack said paper, but no one complains, because we feel like it's worth it to try to make this as good of a site as possible for everyone in the lampworking community. Being human, we also occasionally make poor decisions, miss the last line of threads that might be questionable to others, fuck up, etc.... But we're trying. If you have any suggestions on how we can go about it better, please, write them down and PM them to me. As I said before, I would be happy to read them and take them under advisement. But please, know that we're trying, and we do want this to be a great place.

I just wanna say thanks to all the people that make this forum possible ...
I don't hate the forum I actually love it and I try to contribute in a valuable way as much as possible ...
I may be a little hurt myself because of losing the ability to gain rep. I don't really post in others for sale threads unless im interested in buying the item ... I also try not to talk shit unless I feel like what I have to say is beneficial.

Hmm, maybe Misha just fixed that for you. I checked your rep before I repped you and after I repped you, and you jumped from 9 points before to 10 points after.

Also, just in case anyone is wondering, I don't have the power to bump someone up an entire rep point. You must have just been on the cusp. That, and I believe you still keep your rep from deleted threads, even if you can no longer access the thread. It would actually mess up the database to do it otherwise.

The ability to receive new rep was never broken on dino's account, but some went missing somehow. I haven't actually figured out how yet, but it's near the top of my to do list and I haven't forgotten. :)

side note, I think it takes 1000 points to bump a rep power point. Icky (at this time) gives 139 points every time he reps someone, where as I give 88. If you look in the top right corner of every post, you'll see this info for every member. I won't give 89 points until I go up another 1000 points. Make sense?

I started watching it, but my eyes were sore from work ( excel and quick books, not the torch) so I couldn't take the subtitles.

Glad too see this being discussed. Not sure what the solution is but glad we all agree that a problem exists and is being given the light of day. Need some sort of digital hose to keep to trolls at bay :)
