I really don't want to be, though. I'm just trying to determine if this is something that is going to be taken seriously, or not. I'm fine with either, I have all of about 5 minutes invested into it so far.

Serious, please. This thing has already cost us quite a bit of dough. Lets make good use of it please!
Loyd, thanks for the help.
I really want to see this be taken seriously and built up into a huge wiki (hopefully with pic uploading ability). I will try to contribute as I have time, but as a beginner, a lot of my knowledge is pretty basic. But I suppose I could just post what I know and if its wrong or missing bits, etc.. than others can fill it in. Just dont rag on me if I post something and its not totally right....
Mainly I think it would be great for the posting of techniques and tutorials, like I did with fuming... there are so many things I want to know about, but reading them as a long combination of posts like they are in the current tutorial section really is hard. Also I think it would be cool to have profiles of people, much like how in wikipedia you can look up people by name and see who they are, I think it would be great to be able to look up snodgrass or marcel or slinger, etc...
I just posted this on the wiki sub, but maybe it'd be better here...
Create snippets. Like for "wrap and rake" you could write something simple like:
A lampworking technique where color or clear is threaded onto a piece, and then raked, creating a feathered design.
you could then create a snippet or stub for "threading" and "raking". Just having a line or two about a technique gets it in the database. People can then expand on it from there, until a full description with pics matures.
I'll try to create some snippets later.
thats pretty much how it goes.... i was going to cross link content and save space on the phantom post
im sitting here with the guide reading up on how to do things......
you can build a lay out pannel guide for step by step pictures aparently.... for a tut.
theres gotta be a way to condense these things down though the faq im reading is huge....

Ok, I have no problem with this being a serious wiki....
I do have a problem wioth zealot users going on a deleteing spree getting rid of topics that aren't hurting anything and add some character to the wiki.
I agree with misha on deleting the Great White post as there IS a glass related "great White" option....
But loyd, buddy, take it easy on the mass deletions ok? We can police our own, and so far I personally havent seen anything too egergious posted on the wiki. For now, while it's getting started at least, can we please agree to not outright delete things unless it's in direct conflict with good information?
If you have a problem with a post, or a poster, please contact them via the PM function of the forums, or post an addition to their wiki entry suggesting the page be put on ice.... and maybe if 3 or 4 people add that same suggestion to the page THEN the 5th person along can delete it. I think that would be pretty democratic and fair...just an idea
I personally don't see a problem with pages for stuff like Sepulworld, triple blown, and a few of the other silly inside jokes we as a forum have cultivated over the years.
But I'll tell ya one thing, knowing that anything I type, serious or in jest, is at the mercy of a zealot, I don't think I would risk a serious post lest I offend, confront, conflict, or somehow go outsides the bounds of strict seriousness.
just my 2¢

Prima and I talked about that earlier, doug. This is a GLDG wiki, so things that are GLDG culture like sepulworld and nomad, etc. are legitimate entries. Who cares if the rest of the world doesn't get our inside jokes! But before that we had deleted the dwaine entry, he's gldg culture too. I'll try to figure out how to put it back..should be able to.
The rest were left there...except the little blue burning man which was just kinda lame lol.
Anyway, serious yes, but our culture goes, too. Does that sound like it will cover most content questions down the line?
i don't think anyone should be able to delete anything except sysops..altho of course people can edit your entries. I'd hope people edit to ADD useful info, correct a spelling mistake, or the like...not change someone's work.
we'll see how it goes...keep the ideas coming!
Awesome Misha and Prima and all the rest.
And yeah, I know no one outside the sysops can truely DELETE a post....
but can we have a rule that says regular users cannot blank page another user just because they dont feel the content belongs?
it's one thing to correct, edit, and contribute... it's another thing to take out entire pages because you don't agree with the reason for it's inception.
Also, I noticed on wikipedia there is a system where a page can generate complaints and be auto-locked, deleted, moderated, or whatever. Looked into that yet?
and where are the pictures?!
-Doug
Prima is in charge of pictures...
Yes, lets have a "rule"...no one edit out someone's content! add to it, correct a spelling/grammar mistake...you know, polite edits. It's either that or add your own page! Anything else is up to wiki admin.
those of you who add the most useful content will be the ones in charge of editing stuff down the line. ;)
Here's a great example of how to use a wiki politely. These users have each gone in and corrected a mistake, added a little info, or fixed a link. No one took any info out! nice work on the page too by the way, guys!! I added rep points to those of you who posted in this thread for working on that page. ;)
sorry missed your auto lock question. i'm going to wait for prima to come along for that, too. this is his project really so i don't want to change things he might want one way for a reason, ya know. i'm sure he'll read this soon. :)
Back to the subject of making an index...
Wiki does it for you....
http://www.thegldg.com/wiki/Special:Allpages
I just checked out the index looking good...
I'm already seeing some mistakes though. For instance, under "powder", powder isn't a essential part of graal, just the easiest way to do it. Graal can be done by coiling or striping over a colored blank, not just with powder.
Personally I think double and triple blown is a real thing, back when I made IO pieces, I would load so much art into them that they wouldn't fuse all the way with one heat/constriction. I would have to blow the piece out really thin and then shrink it down, often more then once to get all the inside artwork to fuse properly. I think this qualifies as double or triple blown.
I'm going to wait till theres more content before I start editing though.
All in all, good work guys!
that's not double/triple blown...that's called working in your glass. ;)
@ Misha: Yeah but I do blow the glass two or three times, so technically it is double or triple blown.

Well, you've done a complete 180 from the email you sent me about wanting this to be serious. I deleted a bunch of stuff based on that email. I won't anymore. Sorry to those whose stuff was deleted, I was acting on a mandate that apparently has been reconsidered.
loyd
Lol... a man date..... didn't know ya swung that way
Seriously tho, everything is all good, sorry for the ill vibes loyd, just dont like seeing mu hard work (kidding) blank paged.
Feel free to add your own content, and do it as seriously as you like... as for policing other people, let that be the job of the mods and admin. I think we can police ourselves better than someone else, and when that fails there are actually a lot of people with mod access to the wiki, so any real problem will be dealt with through those channels.
Basiclly, what I'm seeing is this.... we can add a bunch of nonsence terms and inside jokes, so long as that doesn't obfuscate or inpose itself on something serious. I.E. the Phantom thread should be about the GTT torch, not ghosts and ghouls.
But since no one is ever going to seriosuly look up "Borosillicate pancakes", there's no reason to delete that.... it's there if for some odd reason someone else wants to see it (ok, it's not yet feel free to make the page) but since it doesn't interfere with any real information it's not like it's a big drag on the useability of the wiki.
As for names, each user has their own Wiki address they can customize for their own info and "talk" if they like, but there are a lot of people here who for whatever reason wont have a User:Name page, and need one... like Sepulworld, since he hasnb't been online in a couple years, he's not going to make his own page... so one of us will do it for him.
Right now I would say that if a normal user has a problem with the content of a page then edit it to add or correct the content, but do not udner any circumstance blank the page without leaving some explaination or contribution.
If there are any really bad obscene or offensive pages then by all means flag them, blank the page, leave a note, and let someone know in the Wiki discussion thread here (it's off the main discussion board menu). but if it's just a joke you dont like, or something you feel may not really be at home on the glasswiki, just say so at the bottom of the page.
If certain users start to become a problem they can have their entire posting privledge revoked, so it's not like this is some wild-west no mans land wiki.
Also, Studio Altitude - Don't wait for more content before you add your own. I spent some time last night planting stubs to get some ideas for topics out there. Feel free to expand on any of those or start your own.
And you're welcome to be yourself, this doesn't have to read like a textbook from the first post, there are plenty of people here willing to clean up and edit rambling posts and the like.
Have fun with it guys, and if you see a FAQ postsed here anew, add your reply to the wiki instead of the thread (or both)
-Doug
I have added a file so you guys can help teach the chatbot.
