Re: steaks thread - newbie progression
Hey bro your doing really well for being at it for such a short time, I wish you were near here I'd hook you up with some scraps and a lesson or two. If you get stumped on anything feel free to send me a message I'll help you anyway I can man. I do like that turtle. Practice practice practice, is my best advice, it just takes time really, theres no substitute for time behind the torch. Mabie I can shoot you a video or something, I never tried inter-continental lessons before, but I'd really like to help you out. I love to see young lampworkers come up, I haven't forgotten all the hard learned lessons I learned on my own thru trial and error.
so about those loops,.....I wish I could just show you one time then you'd have it.
you want to do it all in one smooth motion, heat enough glass to make your loop, dont be scared to heat more than you need and let it cool a bit before pulling, you want the glass to be the consistency of cheap bubble gum, the kind that comes wrapped in paper. thats really the secret is getting it sloppy and waiting for iit to cool down to just the right consistency before you pull it.
Really the only way to get there is to do several thousand of them.
you could just take a peice of like 8 mil clear rod and just ull a loop let it cool and knock it off the end and do it again over and over, by the time you get thru about a half a rod you should have it pretty well down without having to make 50 pendants, then when you do put the work in you have nice loops.
Just keep going, next thing you know 10 years will have gone by and you suddenly realize that now your making all the stuff you never even thought you'd be able to.
Re: steaks thread - newbie progression
man i hope it like you said in some years haha
i made the loops different
some like you said
some i did with a tungsten pick
i think the heat and wait and pull method is the best for me atm
kind regARDS FRANK

and i got also something smoke related
i made 4 18,8 slides german style not push style, wall thickness at least 3mm, and one B/W glowrod for a friend

http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/9914/head21.jpg
http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/8733/head22.jpg
and here is the glowrod, i am really happy about how the black and white swirl thing(how do you call it?) came out

kind regards frank
ps: i have problems when i wann do a reversal ball, i do the twist fourth an back and the tube gets longer and thinner, so i want to condense it back to a ball, but that wont work, and if i condense it and it becomes a ball then there is a really solid glass mass at the end of the ball opposite of the blowtube
maybe i forgot one step, i also cant get it twist as tight as i see sometimes
practice practice practice?
and when i encase a tube with color and the with clear i get thiose little bubbles trapped between the lines of clear(do you coilpot or stripe down?)
man i have a ton of questions :D
Re: steaks thread - newbie progression
i stripe down, i think you just need to put the clear on hotter. it also helps to have the color worked in before coating too.
Re: steaks thread - newbie progression
i used a 3mm rod to stripe maybe i just have to take a bigger one like 8mm or 10 mm but then the clear seems to be too thick,
oh btw when i want to make something everytime it turns out bigger then i wanted it to
kind regards frank

like I suggested to Kat in her work thread, use a smaller torch, like a National 3a/b. Then you can get more detailed work done. finish your loops on the little torch, they will come out even better.
