smolder holder's curio collection
How's it going everyone? Well I've been encouraging members to post their work and thought it only fair if I do the same so here is some of my current work and I will continue to add stuff as I finish peices. I'm only a part time flameworker but I love it so. Glass is an insatiable addiction for me.
Thanks to everyone on this site for your inspiration and the willingness to share information. any comments are welcome. Thanks for looking.
Been on a sherlock bender lately

Re: boiseno21's work thread
These are my pieces. My computer got a really bad virus and the hard drive had to be reformatted so the only copies of a lot of these pics were in my gp.org gallery

Re: boiseno21's work thread
YO! This is awesome work man! I didn't know you was a beast at this stuff lol!!! The bottom sherlock is my favorite! Love the colors! Awesome man!!! If I could rep you again I def would!
-
Re: boiseno21's work thread
Nice shaping man, keep up the good work!
-
Re: boiseno21's work thread
Thanks for the kind words. I feel like I've improved 100 fold over what I was doing a year ago but as far as knowledge of glass goes I still feel newbish....so much to learn. Hippi, LTD hit it on the head, it was the left over tube from the bowl section honeycomb and I just put clear and silvercreek dots over silver and gold fume then reduced it

Re: boiseno21's work thread

Re: boiseno21's work thread
cool sherlys man! it makes me want to go make a couple myself i really dig the last one in the first post.
-
Re: boiseno21's work thread
are you just taking tubing and laying lines on the outside of it for the AP sherlock?
-
Re: boiseno21's work thread
cool stuff. what color is the honeycomb on, on the piece in the pic above the ap one?
-
Re: boiseno21's work thread
Frillcappa, yeah that's exactly what I did, almost gives it a woodgrain look. Except for the mouthpiece and bowl, that's coilpotted ap, blown out and honeycombed.
HMK, I think it was momkas almond nugget, it reduced more than I wanted.
More to come soon.......

Re: boiseno21's work thread
Thanks Kato, yeah it's one of my favorites that I've made. It went to a friend so I've got to see it several times and the honeycombs on it are poppin now.

Re: boiseno21's work thread
I'm so excited!! In about a week I'll be buying a new mirage and digi aim kiln!! Oh I can't wait! My wife rocks for supporting my very expensive, time consuming hobby.
-
Re: boiseno21's work thread
Ugghhh I just called to check up on my mirage order.....another month, damn I'm already pulling my hair out in anticipation I won't have any left by the end of december. Home studio is up and running except for my new kiln which I just haven't ordered yet.

Re: boiseno21's work thread
I like the encalmo thing you have going on in some of the previous pieces; playing the cards you have, stacking up the experience, making what works work: encalmo is a way of life.
looking forward to seeing what comes next.
-
Re: boiseno21's work thread
Thank you HWC I appreciate it. I need to get some of my pendants I've been working on up. Pretty much what size I'm stuck doing until I get a new kiln. Encalmo is fun....for now

Re: boiseno21's work thread
things look good, you seem to have a firm grasp on shaping, and sectional work. some nice action on the sherlies up there ^.
i have a tip for you on the pendants, and the separation that appears to be happening on the surface of the honeycombs, if you hold it up to the light and look across the surface you may see the lines on the surface where the dots of clear have separations from the rest of the glass.
sometimes when honeycombing, the dots don't "gel" with the glass you are honeycombing into, and you get these separation lines, that often manifest on the surface. they can keep reoccuring even after flame polishing, unless you use a sharp and quick oxy flame to polish the surface.
finish your shaping on the pendantd, then at the end, polish the lines up with a very sharp oxygen rich flame. the lines on the surface (if any) should disappear. if you were to heat the whole thing up again they would probably reappear. its some kind of incompatability at some small scale. so just do that quick/sharp oxy flame polish at the end before kilning. it should solve any surface funk.
anyhow, hope it helps, its hard to see in the pics if this is whats going on. it can also happen within the honeycomb, where the glass has "seam" lines, where the glass appears separate inside, and there is not really anything to be done with that. i can't tell which you are experiencing, or if its both. good luck and keep it up !

Re: boiseno21's work thread
Riley, yes I have both of those things happen sometimes, thanks for the tip I'll use that to make sure all my pendant faces are smoothed out. Any ideas on how to minimize the seam in the honeycomb? It seems to be less if the glass rod I'm dotting with is rippin hot before I touch it to the substrate glass. Thanks for the knowledge riley.
-
Re: boiseno21's work thread
its something like that. it eludes my understanding, it is probably like you are saying more about having the temperature of the bubble warm enough and the dots hot enough when applied. then the difference in temperatures isn't as drastic and manifested in visible seams.
i am sure everyone who has done honeycombs had experienced this at one time or another.
anyhow a few more tips for clean honeycombs (at least visually). clean your rods with alcohol prior to use. if you grip up high on the rod, oil on your fingers will make it dirty again so keep it clean.
as well after applying dots, sometimes the rod will also get a little bubbly at the end where the thinner glass has boiled. if you clean this off, you will get cleaner results.
anyhow good work man, i dig your style, lots of organic tones, attachments, and marbles. good stuff.

Re: boiseno21's work thread
one last thing about to elaborate on what i was saying about polishing the surface. the seams will reappear when worked in a more reducing flame, and anytime i have had this problem, i just wait till the shaping is done to polish the lines off the surface. otherwise if you do polish it while working the piece you will just do it over and over again, so its more of a thing to take care of at the end. otherwise you just get preoccupied with it.
p.s. use alcohol and paper towel/cloth to wipe clean anything before you photograph. touching the object with the paper towel/cloth last as to not put fingerprints and smudges back onto your goods prior to snapping the shot.
there is also a f-ton of photo tips on here, with tips about using indirect lighting, when and if to use a flash and whatnot. blah blah blah, hope it helps

Re: boiseno21's work thread
Thanks Riley, quality of product is really important to me so anything to raise the quality of my work is VERY much appreciated.

Re: boiseno21's work thread
and with the combs alot of the times if there fume ones you may not really be able to see all the definition of the comb but if you run it through a couple of cycles in the kiln it will really grow the blues and seperate the dots nicely! i find it eazier than letting it cool a bit and flame striking over and over again

This advice sounds familiar....

Re: boiseno21's work thread
I had an analog kiln which I just sold and am still waiting to get a digi aim 99 but I'm really looking forward to the control that the digi will give me when kiln striking, as well as holding temps for sparklers and chrome colors.

Re: boiseno21's work thread
i forgot to take an individual pic of the eye. oops
-
Re: boiseno21's work thread
Some good work (as usual)!
I been wondering how to do a eye

Re: boiseno21's work thread
There are some really good eye tutorials on here I believe aussie has a good one. That eye was made with eye millie which is a different tech than aussie's tut. His eyes kick ass btw. This is like the fourth one I've made, deffinitly takes a little practice.

Re: boiseno21's work thread

Re: boiseno21's work thread
Thanks for nabbing that link tlkq. You posted at the same time as I did. I was just a little lazier :bouncy::o:
Thanks for the comments.
-
Re: boiseno21's work thread
Tlkq that pendant is a fumed honeycomb that I reduced, imploded then flamestruck, backed with some china black. Did it on 12mm x 3.2mm schott.....I think those are the dimensions.
-
Re: boiseno21's work thread
Thanx tlkq!
And I agree too. Think that 3rd one is my fav too!
-
Re: boiseno21's work thread
Keys- I used butterscotch for one of them and I'm not sure what the darker color is. It was in a bag of momkas shorts.

Re: boiseno21's work thread

Re: boiseno21's work thread
Ok first project after I got my kiln this piece was commissioned by my boss for a chemist I work with. 43 sections, totally fun to build. One of my largest sculptures to date. Sorry for the crappy phone pics. Can't find the charger to my camera.
