smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
Here is the video from a smoke bomb test I did in the mobile shop. The smoke bomb rolled half way and started shooting back words. All the smoke appeared to go right out but there was a smokey haze in my shop after word. What do yall think? the shop is only 8x8 and like 7 foot high so may have been alot of smoke for small area, but would have rather in been completely clear. :turtle:

Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
Yeah, I'd say that vent is a little on the weak side. The smoke did evacuate however the majority of it was pushed up by the velocity of the smoke bomb. Also, your bench is a little narrow due to the lack of interior space so your torch is going to end up being back more like where the bomb rotated so your test was actually pretty accurate. You also don't appear to have any other fans running. Unless your going to stay in a cold climate, your shop is going to get hot and you'll probably have some fans on you to keep cool. You need to factor these in with your smoke test. Did you have the door to the camper open during your test? If not, where is your make up air coming from? I would recommend upping the CFM of the fan if possible. If not, at least set your torch up on something to get it as close to the fan if possible. I also wouldn't recommend using any powders or heavy fuming with your current set up.
..just my thoughts

Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
Also keep in mind you as a fleshy being create a dead spot in air flowing near the torch, so if the makeup air was behind you, you'd disrupt the flow.
-
Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
make up air comin from openings near floor on either side on camper, door closed.

Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
I would call that a large FAIL when it comes to ventilation. Just imagine the green smoke is poisonous vapor? Cant you taste the funk in the air while working? how much intake air do you have comming in?
Also, do the smoke bomb test with your torch running, then place the smoke bomb in front and watch how the thrust from the torch changes the distribution of green death vapors.

Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
air & vent might be ok but the hood needs some work. my understanding is the hood should capture the exhaust, yours is kind of deflecting it. i would try taking the thing with your posters on it and angle it the opposite way, instead of the smoke going up and away into the room it should be going up and towards the fan, know what i mean?
also eliminate the shelf against the wall under the fan, on the back wall of your workspace, it should be a clear trip for the air up and out, the right angle is going to screw up the airflow.
-
Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
That board is there to direct the airflow since the fan is actually directly above my head when I work since that is where there was a vent hole in the ceiling all ready, and used to pull smoke around my head, the cabinets cant really come out, well they could prol but they are factory sealed in and wanted to avoid it.
Here is a link to my mobile shop thread with pics and other info about ventialtion and whats been tried and what not.

Ventilation seems to work great with incense as smoke source!
-
Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
It seems like if you lower the thing hanging just a little bit more it will catch way more of the smoke. Is there any potential for sourcing a more powerful fan?
-
Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
Im totaly open for change and am personly a stickler on ventilation so I want this to be perfect not just so so...... but I have limited means right now and I cant keep playing around till I find somethin that works I need to get it right the next try!! thats all I know, any help would be great.
TlkQ ~ I was thinkink same thing and not sure what you mean by sourcing
also Like I said the smoke bomb started shooting backwards half way through

and good call on doin it with torch goin! does my torch put off anywhere near the ammount of toxic vapor as that smoke bomb does smoke?

Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!

may be what has to happen! but I have few sources right now :(

Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
i looked at your pictures and venting out the top is not a good choice. i would take out the cabinets and cut a hole for your fan on the side of the trailer. then build a proper hood/enclosure and go from there. that is your cheapest and best alternative as i see it.
-
Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
The issue he is going to have with that is losing the ability to fold up the workbench and store their motorcycles. You could use an attic fan that would only stick out on the outside of the vehicle and still allow you to fold the bench up. You could even make removable side panels to help box it in. I agree though that venting out the side is going to be his best option

Its a in my opinion expensive RV so people advised against it, but I thought it was best Idea too. No auto body or RV shops that I called will do it though. I cant talk myself into cutting a hole into the side of my RV though.

What I thought too! but advised against doin that and as I said above no one will! so hmmm.... I even have a auto shutter for the outside that I bought that opens when Fan turned on. But no one that I called will install that in a RV. I considered it really I did but cant bring myself to hack a hole in the wall of my RV. I have instructions on how to do it though ?? I duno kinda bummed now

Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
also talked about ventilation on page 11 and 12 of my progression thread

Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
I think step one is going to be lowering that hanging thing a bit. Step 2 is going to be getting a stronger fan. A duct of some sort coming down from your fan would help as well, but would make folding the work bench up a bit of a hassle.
-
Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
id take out the cabnits and build a hood in there place and just use ducting to duct it to your fan...i think its ur best bet... i dont think u need a strionger fan.. a 1350 cfm is what i think u said u had.. that should be good enough to clear out that space.. make a hood and duct the rest and ull be fine...make sure you use 16" ducting other wise ull loose CFM

Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
good ideas yall! Im wondering if the rain cap that was on RV for the vent all ready is blocking alot of the air flow as well. Its not so easy to just run and get stuff in the RV so I def need a good plan :) :turtle:
-
Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
Cut the bottom out of the cabinet and put a fan in the wall behind it? Making the cabinet into a hood....
-
Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
ditch the rain cap, yea probably obstructing flow, seriously? here is a link to windows for trailers, you just cut a hole, get some screws and sealant and go for it. http://www.motionwindows.com/prod1800.php

And that is the problem. You need a defined hood and it needs to be under cabinets that are over bench and it should pull/push directly out side of camper. The roof vent /fan is to small and in wrong location, it is not ventilation, its directed air flow for "breathing" only and not nearly sufficient for hot glass work.

Then you might have to consider NOT working glass in RV. What arrangement does RV have for cooking stove?

Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
Does it help to take off the rain cap when you work?
My first vent system let some smoke linger like that, I regret working like that for many months. I doubled my fan size (2350) and increased the duct from 6 inch to 10 inch.
Headaches, nausea, night sweats, general fatigue and lethargy. Definitely not worth it.

Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
If you are ina state park in Florida, why not just blow glass outside the trailor? It cant be that bad outside....
-
Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
Turtle,
DEFINITELY CONSIDER THE IDEA OF A MAKE UP AIR SYSTEM. THIS MEANS YOU NEED TO FORCE AIR IN TO THE WORK ZONE AND PRESSURIZE THE SHOP WITH POSITIVE AIR FLOW. THEN WITH A SLIGHTLY SMALLER EXHAUST FAN THE AIR WILL VENT TO THE PATH OF LEAST RESISTANCE. THIS IS HOW ALL RESTAURANTS VENT THEIR KITCHENS.
HOPE THIS HELPS!

Not an option my friend ~ and there is a vent above it that vents out the wall in front of stove

I installed the attic fan under the 12" x 12" hole that was all ready in the roof, Im not using a fan that was in it allready. But I see what your saying :)

I cant ditch rain cap, or rain will come into my shop? Prol jsut need a diff style of rain cap.
WOuld you do that to your car??? Believe Me I want to......And may be only option that will work. Just trying to avoid it if I can.

Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
You can totally get on the roof without a ladder.. Park under a tree you can climb? Stack some shit? 2 picnic tables on top of each other?
-
Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
Ok i know yall want me to jsut cut a hole in the camper. First I dont posses the tools to do that right. Ive been unable to find any shop that will even consider cutting the hole for me. Second Im pretty sure There may be a metal support beam goin acros the wall in front of my table that would obstruct a fan bein put in the wall right there.

The instalation instruction for these are to replace exsisting windows! not telling you how to cut a hole properly.
-
Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
Well if you cut the hole for a fan it'd more than likely be smaller than the hole for one of the windows. You could just enlarge the hole when it came time to sell the RV or whatever and install one of those windows in it's place
