For pieces with a large heavier can I've been leaving the blowtube on the bottom of the can during assembly. I find it's easier to spin and and do marbles/attachments. Then as a final step reattach...

i think it's because the graphite is cold when you push it. sometimes i'll flash my graphite in in the flame right before i punch it.

You can also buy big blocks of foam at craft stores like Jo Ann Fabrics. Maybe Michael's would have it too. You can get a chunk of it and cut it down to size. It might be pricy though.
