  1. Re: Anyone else ever consider getting a "real job"?

    That's exactly what I'm doing!

I'm almost 1/2 way through my first semester in Machining. School's nothing like I remember. LOL

  3. Re: Anyone else ever consider getting a "real job"?

I've definitely thought about that, but decided that would be more of a retirement plan for me.

  4. Re: Anyone else ever consider getting a "real job"?

That's what I want to get back to.

Having a different career and glassblowing as a hobby. Making what I want to with glass instead of what I have to so it will be fun again.

  5. Re: Anyone else ever consider getting a "real job"?

    Exactly what I'm getting at!

The people that start working with glass, sell their "beginner" work cheap, continue to sell at the same price as their work progresses... The stores take advantage...
  6. Re: Anyone else ever consider getting a "real job"?

I don't see this as being negative. I see it as being realistic!

This is exactly what I'm getting at with bringing up the topic.

  7. Re: Anyone else ever consider getting a "real job"?

Well one issue I have is that I have NO savings for retirement. And the current trend with our situation (stagnant selling prices vs. supplies/cost of living increases) I have no chances of saving...
  8. Re: Anyone else ever consider getting a "real job"?

I'm not looking for fame and fortune. I just want to be able to pay my bills, take care of my family, and eventually retire without having to worry about finances.

  9. Re: Anyone else ever consider getting a "real job"?

I see one thing that hasn't changed about this forum, the pissing matches.

  10. Re: Anyone else ever consider getting a "real job"?

I even know of some known high end glassblowers that are struggling.

In my area, pendants, marbles, beads, etc. don't sell, period. Even at craft fairs and the like.

I'm at a point in my life...
  11. Re: Anyone else ever consider getting a "real job"?

No disrespect, but that is the issue that keeps driving wholesale prices down.

You cut your own throat for future sales by not standing your ground and making it seem you are desperate to make the...
  12. Re: Anyone else ever consider getting a "real job"?

That's one main contributing factor. Because of the price slashing, stores have determined the max they are going to pay.

There are several times I've sold to stores that reach in their case,...
  13. Re: Anyone else ever consider getting a "real job"?

This distributor pays outright instead of consignment, that's the reason for the 30%. I've negotiated my prices as much as I can.

  14. Re: Anyone else ever consider getting a "real job"?

The classes I'm looking at are for a degree that covers manual and CNC with a basic welding class.

  15. Re: Anyone else ever consider getting a "real job"?

I make mid-range spoons ($12-$25) and sell them to a distributor. Yes, I take a 30% loss, but that is justifiable by me not having to spend a couple of days a week to go sell and not having the...
  16. Re: Anyone else ever consider getting a "real job"?

Emmett, you and I have discussed this before. I'm glad everything is working out to your advantage.

  17. Re: Anyone else ever consider getting a "real job"?

Exactly, now the market dictates what price everyone pays for our work. And it's not going to get any better. We will have to continue making the same thing for the same price or lower while...
  18. Anyone else ever consider getting a "real job"?

This is something I've been pondering over the past couple of years...

I'm an old fart, been working with glass for 19 years, almost all production (strictly production for the past 5 years).
    ...
  19. Re: Taking a break from glass during the day...

    I've just always preferred recurves.

I actually prefer traditional archery and shooting off the shelf instead of using an arrow rest.

I've ordered a bow with a lighter draw weight to work on my...
  20. Re: Taking a break from glass during the day...

    Nice!

I just ordered another bow with a lower weight to work on my form again. I've realized that it's been so long that I've lost my form and need to get it back in order before stepping up to...
  21. Re: Taking a break from glass during the day...

Misha, they are made in many draw weights (how much it takes to pull the string back) starting at around 10 lbs up to 75 lbs or more. Mine is 40 lbs but am about to have to get a new one. Probably...

    Re: Burning Dichroic

Working with a GTT, use LOTS of "blue" OXY. This cools the flame more.
