    Default is this silver

i found a bunch of these jars at the place i work outta and was wondering if theres a way to tell if its silver without using nitric acid.

I know its hard to be sure from a picture and my crappy description but i was hoping someone might recognize the jar or something. I'm worried they might be for soldering or something

If you hard boil an egg, mash it up, and put it in a container with a piece of silver, the yolk will turn the silver almost black with tarnish rather quickly. Not sure if other metals do this, but fine and sterling silver sure do

When you get casting grain from a jewler it looks like this/try to break one by bending with pliers.it looks almost white when stressed and torn.

fine silver is much whiter/shiner than .925(sterling silver).

or wear a resperatior and give it a go, if you found it in a glass shop i'd say chances are good

make sure to hit the grain with some cleaner first as it could have a protective coating like wax or something to keep it from tarnishing interested to hear your results.

Don't know how well this works, but it seems easy enough.

are there sharp points on each little pebble of metal??? When i was younger i had a toy that made peweter die cast models and it came with a bunch of tubes that look exactly like that, you powered the tube into a little pot in the machine and then it cast little toy cars and models for you. Unless u work at a place that would handle silver casting grain I would dought that it was real silver, with the price of silver today I would not be leaving jars of silver lying around. put some in a metal spoon and hold a torch under it if it melts real quick then its peweter...as far as the egg method, its the sulfer in the egg that causes the silver to tarnish, i belive it will tarnish other materials as well

that was why i said wear a good resprand have good vents, could be lead too.
my freid welds lead batterys all day at work. wear a resperator wash your hands if you give it a go

lead is really soft sqash one, and let us know how hard it is.

pewter, lead both really soft i think, i would say silver is a decently hard metal

i still think if you tear one and look at the broken metal you could tell but thot could be tough to do with little stuff

    sorry typing in the dark!

update- there was a pretty big difference between my for sure silver and this stuff from the egg test

tryed melting this stuff and it melted instantly with a butane lighter. probally pewter as LFC said.

if anyone else ever has this problem i think the surest way is probally to see what temp it melts at. as i just found out silver melts at 1763.2 F so if it melts at anything much lower then that its not silver
