You should be able to mix different brands of glass I.e northstar, tag, glass alchemy, momkas with no problem
Okay guys, My Newb Question for the day!
As I read through Contemporary Lampworking, it of course starts with explaining the difference in COE's - Pretty strait up to understand.
It talks more about soft glass than boro in the book and at the end of the chapter it says that a lot of soft glass is not compatible even if the coe is similar/same....
so question is, is it the same with boro? I just did my first big order of NS odds, but i am curious now if they are compatible with other brands, MOMKA , GA - etc. When working should you keep pieces to one brand of glass or can you mix?
Are there any compatibility issues when working with boro in the ranges of 31-33 coe?
muchos gracias

Most of the current boro brands play nicely with each other.
It's actually one nice "pro" over soft glass, we have less worry about compatibility.
Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down. Never gonna run around, and desert you.
With boro there is a big range with COE it can range from 24-41 on the coe scale.
i've been told if you really need to mix/pair up two colors that don't play well together that you can mix them down with a bit of clear....which will help even out the COE. is this true?

^in some cases, yes.
In the case of mixing down Loch Ness with clear, it doesn't make it work under a ton of clear.
It does make an awesome media for achieving checking on purpose.
had that happen in a vortex mib....just the loch ness checked...almost looks like a sparkle color. that's one mib i wish i hadn't sold.

ahh thanks guys,
So Abe (or any other with knowledge of this), If boro comes in COE of 24-41 what parameters do you have to stay in? I'm assuming you cant work 24 with 41?
whats the biggest gap in COE that you can work?
i don't think coe is the only factor.....viscosity comes into play as well.
i don't have enough knowledge on the subject to expand on that though.

doesn't it say in CL that you shouldn't go more than a few degrees either way?
yeah it does, but it mainly focuses on soft, i was curious if the parameters of boro are different
glass alchemy, momkas with no problem
In some cases the COE can be the same or very close, but the annealing temperature can be different. One glass may anneal at 1090 and one may anneal at 1050, and you'd have to prepare for that in your annealing schedule or suffer the horrible consequences....
But the majority of modern boro tends to play pretty nicely. Abe, Tom Grimmett and Paul Trautman will have the most in depth knowledge of their company's individual colors, and they seem to try to get things to play well together. Working on the lower end of the COE spectrum (~33 instead of ~96) sure goes a long way to help, too.
