Benchtop Crucible
Anyone have any idea if this MIGHT work as a tiny batch crucible for boro? If I wasn't a broke ass Id throw down and buy the thing and let y'all know the results. I've thought for a long time a miniature crucible set up would be the cats ass. Not all of us can afford expensive 3 pot crucibles, nor the huge amount of glass to fill it. But to set up 2 or 3 of these things on the bench top and just fill with frit would be sweet. only thing I see being a problem is having to rig something up so that the crucible doesnt come up out of the unit when you pull the gather. Aside from that, I dunno....would it work? Does this thing get hot enough? Am I oversimplifying? I want my poor man crucible !

Re: Benchtop Crucible
No experience myself but it does say its max temp is 2192F and I believe for boro you need 2200 - 2300F. Some one may jump in and correct me

Re: Benchtop Crucible
This is the closest you'll get to a cheap crucible:

Even if you got that to melt glass it wouldn't be worth it.

Re: Benchtop Crucible
I would say no
Due to the small size and the loss of batch that is seconds .
The usable amount of glass and the limited room to dip a tube in without hitting the walls or the bottom would be a pain .
Then would it be deep enough to get a second blank of clear in.

Re: Benchtop Crucible
I can't afford an Eclipse Jet, but damn I'd love to have one..... that $1,000,000 price tag is a bit out of my reach for now.
Also, I don't think you really meant a batch furnace did you? I think you meant a melting furnace.... melting boro from batch takes a higher temperature than any of the small wire melters will reliably get to. Either way a small metal crucible wont get hot enough.
Suffice to say... the answer is all around no, sorry, that will not work. For $1200 you can make a small pot furnace for melting boro....

Re: Benchtop Crucible
I got a Darby dipper and its almost too small. That thing looks like you could dip a small marble and that's about it. At 2192 degrees max it isn't hot enough either.

Re: Benchtop Crucible
danx for the input guys. I thought it was far fetched, but ya never know. I guess Ill leave the dipping to the pros.

Re: Benchtop Crucible
The Darby dipper (not named for Darby BTW) is expensive for the build quality and longevity from my experience. The Glasshive is making some very nice boro dipping set ups. You can get them to build just about any thing custom you want...

Re: Benchtop Crucible
The AIM furnace we sell seems to be liked as it has a 30lb pot of glass to work with
At least we haven't had any complaints just compliments on it so far...

Re: Benchtop Crucible
Damn I couldn't imagine a 30lb pot full of glass, some day...some day.

Re: Benchtop Crucible
30lbs pot goes fast... like less than an afternoon fast.
Thanks,
Andrew
