Doug I see no list/poll?
Money / Financial
Popularity / Fame
Distraction
Expression
Experience / knowledge
With all the polls and such, I figure this is as valid a question - I'm asking not because I want to know what motivates you but more as an exercise in reflection. I suspect that many of us start one place, and move around a bit over time... but today, right now, what motivates you in glass?
If you have a motivation to add that's not on the list post it below.

Glass is the only thing in my life that can alter time. Ive yet to find out if it is good or bad thing.
Melting wax one candle at a time
I'm what has started to become referred to as a "maker." Learning how to do something and improving upon skills is what drives me in many aspects of my life.

i dont see the option for "chicks, man."
This to a T. This is essentially my life motto. I spend as much time as I can reading, learning, exploring, and doing. I have made and created many things through many different mediums over the years and still have some on my list. Nothing is off limits...quilting, crocheting, knitting, wood, metal, electrical, mechanical, chemistry....mycology.....botany
I just love to melt glass but I also hope to be able to work and make a little bit of money in the process (ill probably never go full time into glass though, at least until I cant do physical work anymore)
I have done a lot of different glass work from casting to blowing to lampworking etc. sometimes I don't know which one I enjoy more, however, the conclusion I have come to is that I love glass and I love being able to create in glass. Doing something new and challenging is exciting and I often get lost in my work (like I am sure many of you do as well). While there are many reasons I does glass, for knowledge, a challenge, to feed myself, but the bottom line is I love the freedom of making whatever I want in a medium that is unlike any other.
im voting money, because these days its a little bit of extra income. originally it was about money too, but not the way it is now. Back when I started, it was because I wanted a piece (a simple sidecar) that I could not afford. I told myself that day, " if they can make it, so can I". it took some time to find the knowledge I needed, but it worked out after a couple years.
I have no intention of ever going pro at this, hell - 2 years ago I never knew I would like doing it! I really only set two goals when I started out:
1. to be able to make functional pieces for myself, the way I like them.... I'm not there yet but I get closer every time. Gotta stop liking such fancy shit.
2. to be able to sell just enough glass to pay for more raw materials and keep working - a self-sufficient hobby was the dream and I'm pretty much about to pull that off now.
it was a joke. here for fun and expression. meditation and relaxation. burn baby burn.
Yea making personal glass is a biggie I forgot to mention myself.

I know it's sounds like some little dab bitch but when I seen a recycler function it was on. I'm fascinated by machines and how stuff works and it hooked me. Now the biggest challenge is to find time between being a husband a dad and a life sucking construcation job.
Because it includes a form of fire
Yeah, it's kind of a spectrum for me as well. I chose distraction, but it's really a combination of the last three choices for me. I work full time in IT, so to me, glass is what keeps me sane, and allows me to put some type of lasting beauty out into the world (as very little with computers is beautiful, and nothing is lasting). The biggest thing I love about glass is the ability to keep learning. I'm happiest when I'm learning new things, and there are so many things you can do and so many things to learn about with glass. My favorite part is the iceberg effect. Where you see this tiny little thing, and you're like "Hmmm, what's that about. I should check that out some more." And you realize that that tiny little thing is actually only the protruding tip of an iceberg. You can choose to just look at that tip, or you can strap on diving gear and go exploring to see whats lying underneath.
I did kind of a poor job of explaining that, but think about amber purple. It's just some glass that does cool stuff, right? Well, how does it do it? It's got silver in it. Okay why? What makes the silver do those things? Flame chemistry. Okay, whats' flame chemistry about? Oxidation and reduction. What's that about? What about kiln and flame striking? That's crystals lining up. Okay, what causes them to do that?
Because after 10+ years of doing it, and not having a job for the past 5 years, what other option do I have?
Mortgage+car payment+bills+living expenses= Having to blow glass.
Plus, I love it.

i hate my engineer job, i hate working with squares, i hate corporate culture, i hate 8am meetings, i hate people who only care about their bottom line.
glass is the opposite of those things for me. glass will hopefully be freedom from my current prison sentence.
On the torch since August 2014. Looking to network and collab with local artists (Englewood, CO).
