I need to fund some other projects and am reluctantly putting my KIMBALL benchtop lathe up for sale. It was originally a metal lathe that was built in the 50's or 60's. The gearbox was rebuilt by Reynolds Electric here in Eugene a few years ago, it has a single speed, runs reliably, is about 5' long. The bore will fit 42mm heavy wall tube and the chucks will hold glass that is substantially larger in diameter. It is a heavy bitch, but I can generally move it with two people and it fits right into the back of my little pickup truck.
The lathe is located in Eugene and I'm asking $3500 for this fine piece of American (UK?) made machinery. I'll post some pictures soon if there is sufficient interest. Thanks for looking!

What a neat little converted machine looks like it was always a glass lathe .

Does it run true? How long has it been sine it ran?
How is it a Heathway.
It does run true and was last run this past January; since then it has been sitting at the back of my living room. It probably needs oil on the torch and chuck carriages to make them roll more smoothly.
I was told it was a Heathway by both the person that sold it to me, as well as the owner of Wheeler Electric when he rebuilt the gearbox and repainted it. There is a serial number, but no Heathway logo.

But is there any evidence Heathway made metalworking lathes?Originally Posted by Sparkey

As I understand it, Knight bought Heathway, and they make no mention of metalworking lathes.
Heathway has been manufacturing quartz and glass working lathes for supply to customers throughout the world since 1936. Our current range of lathes were first introduced in 1983. They are based upon a modular structure that provides a rugged bed design which is available in four different lengths, while any one of seven head sizes can be specified. Heathway can offer small bench top models with a 32mm spindle bore, up to large floor standing models for quartz working with a 530mm spindle bore. We can offer a wide range of both Scroll or Sun & Planet chucks for all of our lathes as well as specialized chucks (e.g. Quick acting chucks, Vacuum chucks, collet chucks, Bell chucks ...)
Fwiw, I wasn't trying to be a dick. I was initially curious about the machine owing to some potentialities that are floating on the horizon. As a potential buyer, price point, functionality, and manufacturer matter to me, that's all. Hope there are no hard feelings.Originally Posted by Sparkey

Hey I have someone interested and local, couple of questions what is the distance between chuck center and bed? Looks to be maybe 3 or 4 inches? My phone has pretty low resolution.
Also the single speed, any idea of rpm or running speed? And the lathe turns away from you? (Standard rotation direction for a glass Lathe. Not sure about a metal lathe ?
Do the chucks have a lock or tighten down nut once something is chucked in?
If you get this lathe I would see about getting a adapter plate to run hsa chucks . Or some kind of standard glass chucks .
Using a standard chuck key would get old if you used day in and day out .
This machine is priced where there is room put extra into it .
This is just somthing ment for poster above .
Not trying to take away from seller .

Hi Wilbur,
Sorry about the slow response. It is 6" from the center of the chuck to the bed, it does turn away from you, I've never timed the RPM (I would guess about 90 RPM), and the pieces are tightened in to the chucks using a standard chuck key. Thanks for the interest, I'm sending you a PM with a phone number if you'd like to give me a call.
