Rod Holder Tool
Hi!!
Does anyone know of a company that makes rod holders?
I need one that can hold up to 16mm glass rod.
Thanks!!

Re: Rod Holder Tool
Just attach it to another rod?
Carlo Donna makes one (not sure what size rod it will hold), but whenever my rod gets short I just attach it to another rod and keep going.

Re: Rod Holder Tool
I already do that. Sometimes things are not as even when I attach the rod which is not a bad thing but thought there was a short cut or easier way to work my pieces.
I have seen them for smaller diameter rods just wondering someone made them for larger diameters of glass

Here's a cheep one that goes up to 12mm

Re: Rod Holder Tool
Drill and tap a cross hole in a pipe nipple and add a bolt, a hunk of old tent pole or whatever you can scrounge up.
This one has a graphite rod in it. Cost me nothing to make but a couple minutes of my time.

Re: Rod Holder Tool
Highly recommend this tool, for the price you can't beat it's heavy duty, I love mine.

This one you can get custom size ends to fit your needs, long handle but lil more expensive, couldn't justify for my needs.

Re: Rod Holder Tool
Thanks for the tip. I am not sure that I have the skills to make this.

Re: Rod Holder Tool
Thanks for the link. I contacted them to see if they make them for 16mm :-)

Re: Rod Holder Tool
Thank you for the mink Morefire. They all seem to hold unto.12mm. I would need one for up to 16mm.
Maybe they do not make them because the rod is too heavy??
I work on 6-7 inch lengths

I do punty up. I was looking for maybe a faster or easier way than taking the extra steps.

Yeah, i got that.
I use the one that Devardi sells. It's kind of a pain to use - takes both hands and about 30 seconds - and anything like it would be about the same. That Twist linked above, though, looks like you might be able to just pick something up and go.

Re: Rod Holder Tool
I saw one that was based on a hemostat
Anybody know who made it?

Arrow Springs makes and sells some. They're handy for just being able to grab up a piece and go - don't even need two hands, can just grab a rod off the table with them - but they aren't very easy to spin. They're sold as "murrini hemostats" - Loren Stump uses them a lot, and shows a cool tech in one of his demos on youtube.

Re: Rod Holder Tool
I'd call Darrel at Blastshield, he could custom make you a 16mm rod holder no problem...
But I do have to ask... are you sure you need it? I mean, the smaller ones for end bits of color when you don't have time to punty sort of make sense... but with 16mm rod, I'd think you're either using it as a punty, or gathering it up to sculpt or as the lens of something.... in either case, just use more rod. Anything that needs a 16mm punty is gonna be hot... I usually cut a 5' rod into thirds for punty, or quarter it for lenses...
Buy 16mm rod by the case if you use it a lot, 1 or 2 rods never lasts me long.
16mm rod is about the point where it's expensive enough that I start to butt seal them and reuse them... it takes some work, sure... but it's worth it to me. If time is worth more, then you can afford to just buy more rod :P

Re: Rod Holder Tool
There's a post on the DIY tool thread for a rod holder. It's just a keyless drill chuck from home Depot on a wooden handle. Think it cost like $8 to make, might want to check it out
-
Re: Rod Holder Tool
most chucks only go up to 1/2" though, about 12mm. i dont know, maybe someone has bigger ones.
-
Re: Rod Holder Tool
Thanks for the advice! I'm not sure know.I just might stick to the punty situation :-)
