You could also open up a glass retail shop, but you have to be prepared to dedicate yourself every day to staff it.
Lol! It’s not much of a retirement plan! It’s a work every day of your life plan!
Running a store is one of the hardest things you can take on in this industry.

Is paraphernalia still illegal? I have heard of OPD but don’t know what changed, if anything.
Running a store is hard in ANY industry, but especially b/m store.
I do what I know, I don't know what I'm doing
I started melting about 6 years ago and one of the first shops I sold glass to a little over a year after I started happened to be owned by another artist. They invited me over to burn with them and it became a regular thing. Then eventually I started working at their shop.
It really was one of the best job set ups I've ever had, working the shop was barely a job and I spent the time mostly persuimg other passions (working out, drawing, getting phone calls and emails done, that sort of stuff). But the best part was I only needed to work part time because I could put as much glass as I made in the store and the owner would split whatever it sold for with me. It was so nice having a basic easy job that kept me in a routine but gave me enough time to make as much glass as I felt like without having to even think about where I was going to sell it.
I've blown glass full time off and on but right now I have a very good full time non glass job that pays far better than any other job I've had but I was much happier having a part time less demanding job with a stable income that allowed me to persue glass with no pressure.
I think in my future I'd like to get back to something like that with a less demanding job and supplimenting income with glasswork. We all know how awesome working glass is and it sucks seeing people get burnt out from the pressures that go with it.

Hey guys. I am back but I really don't feel like posting much.
Glassblowing has been my main job for 20 years now. I have thought of other jobs but I really like what I do a lot.
I had a great quiet week and the most romantic weekend of my life. So I guess I am in a good mood right now.
This is not true. It has taken me 5 years to get my bubbler line going. I have been designing new stuff all the time. Granted it isn't as intricate as some but I am told people like some simple stuff.
For example I used to make this huge bubbler called the woodstock peace pipe. It was cool. I would add mushroom marbles and stuff. I sold 1 or 2 a year in Woodstock. But I sold like 100 small spoons a week too to support myself. I guess I became most know for the 100 spoons.
Let's also admit that most of the old school glassblowers are 5-10 years older than I am.

I had a retail store once. It did not work out well for me either. It is very hard to do in my opinion.
I found a busy flea market I might set up at today. I went with my friend Bella shopping and it is like $20 a day for a spot. I am thinking about doing it with her. That kind of retail is always good though.
I’m going to have to admit glass is a lot more expensive than house painting. Not to mention I can charge material plus labor right now. Costs me more money to make glass.
Sad truth is that after being a pipe maker for so long other than the odd jobs I suggested I am not qualified for anything else.
