Thread: Import Lake Green Striking Red ??

Default Import Lake Green Striking Red ??

I have been using imported boro lake green rod for a while but recently got a new batch. Was making some things the other night and noticed it was turning a dull reddish color in some areas and other areas were staying the blue green color it should be. After annealing , the entire piece was like a solid rusty red color. I have never seen it do that before. Am I doing something wrong?

Its likely too much propane in the flame you are using. Try turning your oxy up.

It's copper coming out from reduction. Might be you, might be the batch.

I was thinking it may have been my flame at first but another oddity is that part of the piece was clear green like it is supposed to be until I put in the kiln and after annealing it turned rusty red as well. I'm going to do some further testing with it but am thinking it may be the batch since I have never run into this issue before using that particular color.

uhhh, no thanks. I'm sure a creative person would make good use of it(not me) but personally the greens that reduce to a red tone is awfully ugly....

Sounds like an extra coppery batch or something if its a marked difference from before.
