Putting photos on glass???
Just curious about the different ways to add photos to glass.
For instance how did the photo get baked onto the pipes in Kurt's Star's and Pipe's?
http://www.glasspipes.org/Gal18119_STARS_AND_PIPES.asp
Or I've seen others that have put photo's into/on glass. Any clue?
Thanks

Thanks Misha, but I couldn't open that link. I couldn't open www.firemountaingems.com either, so it could be my problem.

Re: Putting photos on glass???
I believe it was a baked on decal? I think i saw some through wale apparatus used to mark measuring devices. I think you can also get the decals custom done. Saw the info awhile ago so my memory is a bit hazy.

Jesse, the links didn't work for me, but you can etch a photo into glass using photomask and a sand blaster. Here is a tutorial about how to prep your photo:

I don't know if that's what you were looking for, but I hope it helps.
have a good one bro!

I can't get the links to work either. But for decals on glass you can create your own image using an inkjet printer and use lazertran.

Re: Putting photos on glass???
They are wale-style decals.... go to the wale apparatus page, they have sheets of colored letters and numbers and you can have custom ones made.... The logos on JPs Toros are this style....

Re: Putting photos on glass???
Thanks everyone.
I have the Rayzist set-up and the sandblaster. I'm going to come out with some new series of stuff using that pretty soon. But I was talking about actual realistic photo quality. I'll have to check out wale apparatas.
But I've seen some other work that I don't think was this style. I'll have to try and find a pic of it.
thanks

Re: Putting photos on glass???
I saw this on craigslist for a class in Berkeley, Ca for a class on how to tranfser a poloroid image onto a variety of smooth surfaces, including glass.

maybe it will help

Re: Putting photos on glass???
yup there is a process to develop pictures on glass, I had the info a while back i will see what i can come up with. There is also a local decal company down here that will print you anything....

Re: Putting photos on glass???
in theroy..... you could infact use glass as a photo medium.... its what they used to use in alot of wood box cameras....
you could infact.... use it and enlarge etc and process it like a normal photo system with paper.... just an idea not what your looking for..... there where a few companys providing the chemicals to make your own plates....
on a side note we have a victorian train station they shut down god knows when.... well they finaly got to tearing it down and scrapping all the glass... till some one found out that there where civil war/after negitives.... and some one should probably save them.... i always found that strange...

Re: Putting photos on glass???
you can buy high fire decal paper from the Paradise company, and screen print onto it using high fire enamels. Kind of costly for the screen printing setup, but maybe you know somebody? Usind different colors, with practice you should be able to make photorealistic decals

Re: Putting photos on glass???
Cool, my wifes step-mom has a screen printing business about 3 blocks away.

Re: Putting photos on glass???
as the ink you could try rouche enamels. thinned out with some mineral oil

Re: Putting photos on glass???
rouche and thompson enamels sont fuse with boro.
the question is, I guess, do you need to be able to heat the glass after the photo is applied.
If so you've got the fire on ceramic decals, they look pretty good and can be done in 4 color process (you see them a lot on souvineer shot glasses and coffee mugs). You can really get them in the flame, but they will stand up to annealing temps.
If you're putting the image on after the glass is cool, and don't need to re-work it hot again you can do several things.....you could do a photo reisst with sandblasting or acid for a single color image. Using acid and a good photo resist you can get photo tonality reproduced on glass.
you could sandblast the glass and do a polaroid transfer or a xerox transfer (B&W or color, but the blue wont transfer)
You could use a product called "Liquid Light" which is a brush on photo emulsion. Apply it to the glass and use a contact negative of darkroom & enlarger. it process in standard B&W photo chemestry.
There are TONS of alternative photograhy methods that would work from cyanotype and salt to platnium and palladium.
You could silkscreen the glass
... I dunno..... lots of ideas. If you had a more specific application / idea it would be easier to suggest a process.

Re: Putting photos on glass???
If you are interested in transfering a picture to a somewhat flat piece of glass, use this technique...
http://www.volcanoarts.biz/muse/arti...rpan/index.htm
It uses an iron and transfer medium to permanently transfer an image onto glass, wood, leather, metal etc. Don't think that you can heat it up too much afterwards though.
Looks like fun to me!
