everyday things used as marble stands??
ive never made marbles that i didnt put on pipes or just give away b4 but i just recently got invited to do this craft/art sale thing(something ive never done b4!!) and was planning on making a few marbles to bring...i was wondering what kind of non eysore type of things people use for marble stands? i know i could just order some actual marble stands but this thing is very soon and i have bad luck with things taking forever to come across the border from the states!
thanks in advance!

Re: everyday things used as marble stands??
Take a strip of dichro about 4 inches and coat the back with a dark color like raven or one of the cobalts. Heat up the whole thing evenly and stretch until the majority of the cane is just under a half inch. free form shape the cane into a ring by heating and letting it roll back on itself so to speak. now you have a nice base which you can make according to the size of the marble and even sell the stand as an "extra". OOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR you can find interesting little pieces of wood in the forest and use those. hope this gives you ideas

Re: everyday things used as marble stands??
since you make pipes you probably have some o-rings laying around........those work good if you have nothing else...the only thing is when you pick up the marble sometimes the o-ring can stick to the mib.
let us know how it goes

Re: everyday things used as marble stands??
I have a lot of odd stands, mostly bought at flea markets, glass candle holders work the best, I bought antique ones, their great for displaying your marbles on at shows, goodwill usually has some all the time, I've got some sick ones for $1.00 there.

I like to use those dried out star fishes that you can buy at walmart, the ones with five spikes on the top, almost any size marble fits perfectly on top of these, you can also use plastic washers. hope that helps

Go to your local photo shop such as office depot or office max and ask them for their empty 35mm film cans; the white transluscent ones. They give'em to me free and the lids make great stands.

just spread some uncooked rice out on you table and sprinkle the marbles in there. They won't roll and they will look nice on a bed of white. If you are a real vegan/health nut type, get some wild rice and sprinkle it in with the white just to spice it up.
Pinto beans work good too.
And after the show.....you got food!

And I know you have some O rings Randy. LOL Also smaller diameter PVC pipe cut it with a pipe cutter as much as possible tho. You can put em on that cheap ass mirror tile as well. It adds a little more , just don't dropem. Good luck with your show.

I've just started using turtle beans (black beans), just because our tablecloth is all black, the beans blend with the background really well. . .
Last time I used pinto beans, I used Rosarita. . .The marbles plop down in it great, but man it's hard to get that stuff of of the tablecloth. . .

Re: everyday things used as marble stands??
i just saw another blower display his marbles on one of those plastic panels that cover florescent lights in a drop ceiling. the panel was just a grid of small squares, so no matter where you put a marble, it sat in one of the squares.
a mirror under it shined more light through the marble.
i can't find a link.. worked well, especially for a lot of smaller marbles.

I use tiny white polished pebbles and put them in shells, small glass bowls, or small wooden bowls, and place the marbles on top of the stones. It looks pretty nice. : )

Re: everyday things used as marble stands??
Thanks seth. I used to have a light box with that grid over a flourecent bulb. That got the light coming from below and the grid held the marbles where they were put. But. That was 'big and clunky', so I tried just putting the grid on the display mirrors and that works well. The room/sun light comes thru the mirror and gives the effect of the light coming from below. Cheap too

In the plumbing area of most hardware stores there is a section of brass fittings... What you need is a inner ring for a compression fitting, they are brass rings beveled on both sides. They look nice and are between $.15 and $.50 each depending on size. The brass looks pretty classy and they are cheap enough that you can give them away with marble purchases.
