Gemlin Sweet marble!! we should do a space colab!!
Glass Kitchen doesn't know What he is talking about the fact is Planet marbles aren't implotions or emplotions they are a series of advanced encasements, meaning you dont implode the planet it is encased in one shot. So know and do before you speak, stick to knowledge bout millies your great help in that catogory: D.
This argument about people having to have seen a Gateson space marbles in order to have made one is a crock of shit. When I had made my first space scene I had never even seen one of Gateson's Marbles, even though to this day he feels responsible or feels he needs credit for inspiring my planet series lmao!! It's bull shit if you ask me. Some times people have the same ideas period.. Like for example the Stick Stack I know I named and came up with that tech, but do you know how many people have told me they just one day had an idea and went with it and with not even knowing it they were doing the Sick Stack. They never saw this board never really talked to peeps about glass they just thought of it on there own it happens and people need to just chill the fuck out.the fact is that I learned teh tech from watching guys in the hot shop do roll ups, it gave me an idea for lampworking so I went with it, I was already making tubes from square canes so making tubes from round rods seemed a lot easier. There is even someone at Eugene Glass School who's class consists of learning how to make tubes using the Stick Stack tech. You don't see me bitchin I love people that spread what they know willingly and except the fact that two people can have the same idea's. EGS has been asking me to teach a class maybe I should do one on advanced boro encasements without a stump sucker!! I do think we should have a space colab I think that would be great fun.
A zillion landscape painters paint the ocean from a cliff in Santa Cruz - if their style is realistic, the paintings will have the same root - that being the actual scene. Why the heck shouldn't every glass worker be able to look to the stars and create what they see that is inspiring to them? It is a no brainer that you would use fuming, encasements, frit, dust, etc. to capture the feeling of space.
damn dude, that is super realistic. what black did you use? it looks great.

Wow, I am totally blown away by the smugness and condesending attitute the posters on that thread have towards those of us here on the GLDG. They are literally saying were better than them because were on a different forum, wtf ??
Thanks to all that had something nice to say about what I made. Hey they need chearing up over on the marble board why dont you go paste yer lil rainbow dude over there. Here is another one CLICK
I'm down for the space collab Matt. Spacesceneorama!

All the suppliers will tell you - I bought up all the Northstar onyx fatties I could find for the Black Hole. Glad a little humor was found in my posting.
This thread is reminding me to be on guard at Wheaton this summer - I will have a few space inspired marbles - while they are all inspired by telescopic photos I liked, I have no clue who will get all fired up - I know Gateson will be demonstrating this year but my marbles aren't anything like his Universe marbles. I hope Paul Stankard doesn't come at me with a baseball bat because I'll have a marble with a flower in it - just teasing as he is a great man & artist.
god say's were all biting his style but he's cool with that.

just looked up paul stankard....holy shit!! that is some ridiculous work there.
gremlin, i think the marble is sweet, and like matt said people get the same ideas all the time. i guess if gateson really was the first to ever make this style i could see why he would get a little crusty, but it should also encourage him to take his that much further to set him above the rest
OK- I have some thoughts on all of this. And for once, I would like to try and not flame the fire here, but maybe offer some sort of insight that might be beneficial.
Roy made a nice marble. Whether or not it has a space scene in it or not, does not seem to be the big issue. The actual issue (to me) is that times are tough for alot of hi-skill folks out there (and I'll get to more of that). The marble scene, which I know very little about if anything, seems to be growing in the number of makers. I see more and more everytime I look around. As that market was created, of course it would draw alot of other artists to it. G man has of course created a niche for himself and in doing so has helped to expand that marble trade by having a high standard of finished product to attract buyers... as has Chris. I would probably rank them pretty high up in that world and in contemporary glass.
Now look at paperweights... how many people make floral paperweights and who is the one person who stands out in that arena? I see alot of wieghts out there that are well made, but don't get the attention of the top dog in the buisness. I've never once heard Paul complain about people copying his work or his process... because that would totaly be a waste of breath on his part.
OK- So back to the hi-skill folks. People who stand out and make good work, don't always get all the recognition and money they would like off of their labor. But with any luck and hard work (more luck in my own case), they get to keep on moving forward and getting opportunities. I have observed that the higher up the food chain you go in this business, the harder it becomes to stay on target. The work becomes more expensive, limitting your own market to the few and not the many. The work becomes more labor intensive... the work takes longer hours and even more of a need to be marketed the right way.
The reality is, the higher the fewer. Roy is a very skilled glass artist. So is Chris. Just about any of you newer to the trade without 10yrs in can probably see that both of these guys are pretty solid in their skills. I know both of these guys and would collect their work. The only problem is, I would need a day job... all of my money goes into the shop and development of new stuff. And guess what, I couldn't shell out the kind of loot they would deserve for their work.
So just keep in mind, the better someone is at something doesn't mean that they aren't struggling for the same dollar you might be trying to get. But hey, that's just commerce and it's not anyones fault in my opinion. It's a natural progression.
Thanks to all that had something nice to say about what I made. Hey they need chearing up over on the marble board why dont you go paste yer lil rainbow dude over there. Here is another one CLICK

haha cool-looks a little like Mr. Bill- oh no!
these copying crap discussions are so ridiculous. it really brings to light just how small minded some people really are.
Rex...you may be right. I appreciate your points, and all the other points people have made.
Roy, kick ass marble.
I didn't want to get involved with this argument, it seems like an endless circle actually. However, I wanted to let you know I did post on GA a little about our group here. I would hate to see one group of people say or think something negative about another group of people simply because they are on another forum, as I have seen come from both sides. I support glassaddiction.com and the members there, as I do here. Please keep that in mind and remain respectful. Your points are heard more clearly when you are.
