Hi,
My name is Devin, ive been on the torch for two weeks and loving it. Not much of an artsy person but glass always amazed me, so i decided to pick up a torch and get started. Ive been obsessed since. The only oxy suppy in LA open on saturdays was closed this saturday, so ive been stuck off the torch the last three days and really learned the depth of this addiction.

Check out what ive done so far any suggestions are greatly appreciated since im still really just playing with the glass and getting a feel.

Hi everyone! I'm Courtney, I'm from NJ but live in South Florida now. I work with boro exclusively and I've worked with glass since I was 16 or 17 when I invaded my mom's workshop. I started with stained glass panels, moved onto fusing a little later and now I am a hot glass junkie. I was on the torch for about 2 consecutive years, taking a break for a whole year to convert a shed into a shop.

We wanted to take a moment to introduce ourselves to this online glass community and provide all the readers here with a little bit of information about us and our history. Our goal with posting at this forum is to create awareness about our company, provide factual information about our products, offer technical support, and make customer service more accessible to the end user.

Origin Glass is a division of Elan Technology. Elan has been producing glass beads and powders used in the electronics industry for over 55 years. We are located in Midway, GA, just south of Savannah. We have a 100,000 sq ft manufacturing facility and employ about 60 people. Our parts are made by dry pressing a glass powder into a form and then firing the pressed part in a belt oven to make it solid. Many of the applications that our glass beads are used in require the glass to be fused to metal to form a hermetic seal. We have over 600 different types of glasses, each engineered for specific applications. Our technical products are supplied to some of the following industries.

· Aerospace
· Microelectronics
· Health Care
· Lighting
· Automotive
· Marine Systems
· Telecommunications

One of the parts we used to make was called a gunmount. This is a borosilicate glass bar that is used as a support for the electron tube in CRT television. Us and several other manufacturers in the U.S., including Corning, were making these parts. Apparently some Boro Artists came across some rejects from Corning and began to use them. Some of the well known gun mounts called White Dwarf and Green Dwarf were likely to have been from Corning. About 5 or so years ago Corning stopped making gunmounts. Some artists learned that we also made the gunmounts and approached us to start making glass bars in a variety of colors for them. Until recently, the bars were either sold as a generic brand or private label. A lot of confusion was being created with our glass being sold under several brand names and different color names. To clear up the confusion and unify the numbering and names of the colors we created the brand “Origin Glass”. Over the past year we have been working diligently to improve our glass, and expand our color pallet.

Been a long crazy couple of years. Fired up the torch tonight for the first time since Katrina. I'm rusty to say the least, but that heat feels so good on my face.

Glad to be back.

I have stories for days, but I hate typing. Hoping to see some peoples at Bonnaroo so I can catch up on what's been going on in the glass community.

Hey all,
I'm dOc, 27, from Philadelphia. I am in the process of getting into flameworking.(gathering information) I particularly want to work with borosilicate, making sculptures, marbles and lots of interesting functional objects. (we'll see what happens) I have been interested in glass for a long time but didn't have the outlet for creating until a year or so ago when I got into glass fusing/PMC class with my girlfirend.

Just finished reading Flameworking: Creating Glass Beads, Sculptures & Functional Objects by Elizabeth Mears to get a background on the terms and things like that. Will be getting the CONTEMPORARY LAMPWORKING books soon.

I am a CADD technician by profession working in the engineering field. I have lots of hobbies in my spare time and am looking at trading in some of them for flameworking. I tend to obsess over my hobbies so I'm sure I'll have lots of questions and things for the forum. This seems to be the most active forum that I have found on the topic and I look forward to contributing.

Finally I think I have found an outlet for my creative energy. See you all around.

Ive always been into art, and glass work has always intrigued me. I have a whole lot of nothing to do, So im looking for a rewarding hobby. I think i chose the right one. I am Deborah Conti and I have been teaching lampworking for 8 years...First in Des Moines IA, now in Washington, DC. I just moved here a year ago and have begun teaching and playing and spreading the addiction at The Washington Glass School, in Mt Rainier, MD. I'm starting a lampwork program to add to the other classes..fusing, scraffitto, neon, El-wire. etc. Great guys, great creativity. I, myself, work on a barracuda and am now playing and blowing with more off-the-wall glass...plate, ppg, colored plate, recycled...whatever scraps we have hanging around. Getting some neat effects.
