rings in the bowl
why is it that bowls get concentric rings after they are pushed? it's not really a problem since they are easily polished out but i don't understand what it is that causes this effect.
just curious, m

Re: rings in the bowl
ive actually had shop owners tell me they really like when spoons have that cause the rings hold a metal screen in there really good which i think is fucking hilarious that somebody would put a screen in a glass piece. but their money puts beer in my belly just like anybody elses

Re: rings in the bowl
Back in Vancouver, metal screens in glass pieces was common...

Re: rings in the bowl
i think it's because the graphite is cold when you push it. sometimes i'll flash my graphite in in the flame right before i punch it.

Im guessing the holes are to big...or the buds are to small..just an old timers guess.

Re: rings in the bowl
they are just chill marks. same thing happens if you squash a gather on a graphite plate.
-
Re: rings in the bowl
i guess what i was wondering was why the glass cools in a way that would leave such marks, if anybody knows.

Re: rings in the bowl
probably something to do with as you push the push down, where it touches first it leaves a little ring (cool spot). then as it goes a little further, another ring. and so on. just a guess though.

That is what I would guess also. Like when you flatten a gather, each part cools a little and makes a ring and then the next and so on.

Re: rings in the bowl
Someone pointed this out to me, that a properly pushed bowl will have those because the piper did not have to go back and fix the bowl after pushing it.
That's the reason I like the most.
Kinda like a skill mark, not a chill mark.

this makes sense to me, i bet you're right. i like them in there too but one of my buyers insists that it's stress and demands that they are polished out. oh well, watcha goinna do?

Re: rings in the bowl
i will do triple blown for 5$ more
-
Re: rings in the bowl
i will never leave tool marks. never. take your hand torch and polish them out. the piece will break sooner then later due to the stress, and if your going to make nice shit then go the extra step and polish it out

Re: rings in the bowl
never seemed like it is a problem to me. the stress should be alleviated by annealing the peice. I generally polish them out though, mostly because I have to go in and touch of the hole a bit.
