Re: HMK's mediocre glass thread
You should post a finished version. They are very interesting little contraptions. I like your progress, go get em!

Re: HMK's mediocre glass thread
i could do that, thanks for the uplifting vibrations.

Re: HMK's mediocre glass thread
Way to go Kut, i know ur on ur way to making some sick units, i didnt say it was one of ur sisters, i asked if it was one of her firsts, like maybe u dug up a pic from the archives, but regardless ur coming along quite nicely

Re: HMK's mediocre glass thread
4th recessed joint attempt, and my first real piece of crap that came out of the kiln. i need some advice: why did it crack? chinese white, or too thin, or a combination?

Re: HMK's mediocre glass thread
looks like your were chasin cracks, already,,
did it start at the edge of the clear foot..?? looks like it may have cracked while you were makin it,, where you added more white over cack.. if you ever have a crack it must be melted all the way out.. or it will jack ya up later..
and those colors are a lil sketch too..
but did ya actually get the joint welded in and not deformed??" thats sweet../

Re: HMK's mediocre glass thread
it got too cold while welding on your feet.
maybe.

it was cracking from feet, but way afterwords. i heard every one of the cracks, and the feet were melted on good, i have experience with badly melted on feet, and i assure you these were attached well. they were fat gobs on very thin glass tho. i heated the whole areas around and blew into it and everthang. well attached. i have made quite a few units so far and it usually doesnt crack in the way it was this time. a few times it cracked from cold weld feet, but it was way later this time, and the cracks were spreading all over. lots of them. i have had 2 or 3 chinese white things crack erratically now to tell the truth. im gonna avoid it on large things for awhile again
as for the joints integrity, this one is pretty sweet. not perfect, but getting close. i have made 4 attempts, and one had 0 wobble
. these are the only joints i have put on anything yet.

Re: HMK's mediocre glass thread
5th attempt perfect joint i think, but i had a common problem happen, in that as i was attaching it, a crack formed from an unjoined edge where the joint and can were touching, and it kinda fucked up the unit. i finished the seal and fixed the crack as best i could, but im guessing the best way to avoid this is to have both objects nice hot in the kiln right? i didnt have the bubbler in the kiln this time right before, but the joint was, but i had been flameworking the bubbler so thought it was good to go. i think if both things are brought up to kiln temp first its best chance for success rate right? also maybe quickly tacking the whole edge of the joint down all around, as opposed to taking my time and doing a good seal on the first pass around?

Re: HMK's mediocre glass thread
Yeah ramp up your kiln to 1100-1150 and let it soak for 15 min., then start at one end and work it all out. From the looks of the pics I've seen from vegas the oil domes were all over, way to inspire. By the way what grade of TI do you use?

You didn't mention it but I guess you're supporting the joint on a graphite holder? If yes then (maybe) the holder is taking heat away from the joint too quickly? It would be cosmic to envision through the screen but if you look around, you may have noticed, I'm not there.
and if you can get a good seal on the first touch without it changing shape you are bloody good mate :o)
It ain't where you're from, it's where you're at.
Really.

Re: HMK's mediocre glass thread
i thought about the heat issue with the graphite, and i do have a holder i made, but i just use it to put the joint in position, and i heat it to just barely red before using it, and once i have one spot tacked with a pinpoint flame, i take it out, just for that reason, so it dont cool it too much too fast. but its not the joint that cracks, its always the vape body. i guess if the joint cooled fast it could cause the body to crack tho. im thinking about this a lot, and im sure its gonna all work out sooner than later
i use grade 2 ti. the difference between grade 1 and 2 is just amounts of oxygen i believe.
thanks for all advice guys.

Re: HMK's mediocre glass thread
Nice work kutster, those joints look crazy, I'm thinking if you throw it in a kiln and get it nice and hot, it won't crack...

Re: HMK's mediocre glass thread
im gonna do it right next time
