The people with RVs come out on top in my opinion. The camping is not 100% primitive, but it's a little rough if you're not used to it... and an event like AGI is already mentally taxing. If you don't get a good nights sleep, combine that with blowing glass, talking to people all day and partying... you'll want to crash somewhere comfortable, and have an interior area to call your own.

Camping doesn't have to be rough. You want some shade unless you are an early riser. By nine its hot and muggy inside the tent if you are in the sun. But at night it's so cool and breezy. I had lots of blankets and an oversized tent so that I had room to lounge around, room for my stuff, room for a friend who needed some floor space. You want a tarp to go under your tent, and a rain cover for sure. I also suggest rain boots. Year before last I wore them in the mornings and it kept my feet happy and dry. Suggested it to a friend who went last year, and it earned her a new nickname. Bring a few pairs of shoes and lots of extra socks. It is really wet in the morning. We don't really get much if any dew down here in Texas so the wet mornings were odd to me. Bring a pair of flip flops for the shower, and a bag you can hang while in the shower to keep your stuff off the wet floor. And if you really must have more sleep, there are ample places for shaded or air conditioned napping.

The first year I stayed at the Emlenton, which was fine, but that drive on either side of the day just blows.

Sure Aymie, I don't mind camping. Camping while attending a 5 day glassblowing event is different than camping while on vacation, though.

The problems I see are a> you don't have a real bathroom b> the only place you have to keep your stuff other than your car is a tent and c> the showers could use improvement.

My tent was plenty comfortable, not that I could tell by the time I actually arrived there most nights. I was never cold or wet. However, this last year Don decided on 3 mornings to start up the blacksmithing shop at 7:30 am which wasn't ideal for people liek me sleeping 40 feet away who went to bed at 4 am.

He shoots the cannon every morning too. You get used to it.

You just don't sleep much. Lots of water, emergen-c, and nux vomica is the secret to my survival. That and the fact that my blood is an 80/20 mix of alcohol and glass dust...to drink of my blood is to gain eternal life.

I heard the cannon the first morning, but I was over in the Donner zone by then. Indeed it was not fired the rest of the week. A cannon is one thing; you can go back to sleep. Someone banging on metal for a couple of hours is different.

I'm kind of more concerned about the hygiene situation as I ended up coming down with Lyme disease 8 days after I left AGI. So, to future people out there partying at glass camp with 3 hours of sleep a day: be careful.

You get that from ticks right? That has nothing to do with hygiene. Being shoes for the shower and something natural to most your feet with post shower for fungus. Vinegar works, so does tea tree oil, or miracle mist. The last is what I used to cure the crazy funk I picked up last time.

Agi is not the place for the prissy folks.

Lymes ticks are a problem every place that deer travel you can pick up a tick.

There are some good tick sprays you just have to be aware of the problem. If you find a tick on you pull it off with a sharp tweezer press around the ticks head then pull it out. You don't want to squeeze the body of the tick that will force your blood back into you and it might carry Lymes. Save the tick and show someone in the know.

We will spray for tick next year

It turns out that the ticks that transmit Lyme are deer ticks in the nymph stage, which are about 2mm in size. 2mm? That's pretty hard to see in a dimly lit shower. The fact that the showers could use some improvement is the hygiene reference I'm making. I already volunteered to contribute time and money for this.

Thanks Aymie, I don't think prissy would be a good word for me. 'tick removal duty'? Are you really giving me shit over contracting a serious disease at AGI? What the hell?

I've lived in MN for 12 years, and never had this issue so I was unlucky to run into it out in PA. So yeah, apparently I was bit by a 2mm tick in the back of my knee, and didn't notice. Sorry.

I brought it up because the whole idea of Lyme didn't cross my mind the entire time I was at AGI, and then getting sick with it was like being beat in the head with a sledgehammer. It is pretty serious. Elaine said several people on the street have had Lyme, so I think everyone should be aware.

I was just making a joke about the tick check duty because you have to check ALL nooks and crannies. I was not making a joke about lyme disease. We have ticks out the wazoo out here. On a serious note, tick checking can be done quite well on your own if you are very careful and thorough. I think everyone should know they need to do tick checks. But you don't generally get "bit" by a tick in the typical bug bite sense. If a tick gets his head in enough to "bite" you, he is going to hang on until he is full. You will have to find it, hence the tick check, and remove it the right way.

And I wasn't calling you prissy either. It was just a statement in general about the AGI experience.

I am more than willing to put in some time on the shower as well.

Your own urine heals everything. Been studied for thousands of years. I have studied and practiced urine therapy for a variety of things for at least ten years myself.
