    Default encasing gold in glass

just had a customer come in who went to one of those "find your own gems" places and had 11 grains (not grams) of gold he and his wife found. He wants me to make it into some jewelry for him to give her at Christmas. I use pure gold at the torch for fuming all the time, but I don't know what the chances are of the pieces cracking if encased. Anyone ever done this before or can you point me to a link in the archives (I looked but couldn't find anything). I'm pretty sure that I could put it in a small paperweight, but he wasn't real excited about that.
    Any help is appreciated.

I know this chick in town that leaves pretty big chunks of gold and silver in her finishied jewerly. Like multiple pieces big enough to fume quite a few pipes. I think she said as long as it's melted in right it works, but then again, I think a had another guy tell me that there's no way to get all the stress out of peices like that so who knows? =p
I think she said her stuff was solid, guess only a polariscope could tell. Or having the peice for a long time =(
    Try it see what happens!!

I have encased big chunks of gold with success. Just drop it in a tube and melt well. It just becomes a sphere of gold. I think it was 14K?

I would think if there's enough body of glass around it, the gold is malleable enough to be distorted by the (more rigid) glass, if it wants to change shape?
    It ain't where you're from, it's where you're at.
    Really.

    Hi Jane.

I have made necklaces for people with gold grains and small gemstones they have mined themselves, only I don’t use hot glass… I put them in rice necklace vials with clear oil so they maintain their shape, and also get magnified by the necklace tube.

The best styles for this are the plain tube, teardrop, or the heart. Let me know if this will help you, and I’ll be happy to send you one : )

That's a good idea Tom, I may show them to him and see if that's the way he wants to go.
    Thanks

How about in a hollow bead? Two bead caps would keep it from falling out.

It's a pretty simple idea: Make a bubble, cool it, put something inside, and then close it without heating the enclosed whatever enough to damage it.

Of course, if it's something like cheese, you won't be able to anneal the glass piece in a kiln. And, the cheese became moldy afterwards if I recall correctly.

Works great no problems here either. I've used 14 and 18kt.
The melting point of Gold is quite a bit higher than the annealing temp of boro.
