photoluminescent glass blowing pigments
Hello !
We are looking for photoluminescent (phosphorescent, not fluorescent) pigments suitable for glass blowing. Of course, after googleing the web we find some providers, but in many cases they just presume their pigments will be ok for glass blowing, i.e. will resist to a 1200 deg Celsius temperature. In one case (Glowglass LLC, managed by Joe Imler), we ordeer and paid for some samples which we never recveived...
That's why I'm asking this forum for advices from people who do test photoluminescent pigments in glass blowing. Can you suggest us some sellers with if possible references ? Is there any special tricks in using tthem ?
Many many thanks in advance !!

Re: photoluminescent glass blowing pigments
from the limited ammount I read about it .. the same glow materials used in plastics . are the ones they make glow glass with .. thus the limited sucess most have working with the material .. there is a guy who sells boro glow frit that works really well.. I believe the stuff hes selling is just the glow pigment .. a flux ( borax ? ) and powdered glass . ? but thats just me guessing ..

Re: photoluminescent glass blowing pigments
Thanks for the replies !
Would you know if the ebay stuff would supporte a 1200 deg Celsius temperature ? This is the problem with that kind of pigments. I've found quite a lot on the web, but few are said to support 1200 deg temp !
Thanks again for your help !!!

Re: photoluminescent glass blowing pigments
Finding that recipe and source for materials would be a heck of a good find. Im willing to bet anyone and probably people here knows but will not let loose of the secret.
I wish you luck though, hope you brew up something that turns into the next hype color.

Re: photoluminescent glass blowing pigments
The more pure the strontium,(green glow) the better your chances I figure.
As long as it not a proprietary mix for another application, and its just the pure glow, it should be a fine place to start.
I had a bag of the green strontium brought to me last year. I did get it to work by mixing it into a batch of clear... Took some soft painfully slow work to get it unburnt... It can be done tho. I did it. (with the green)
I'm not saying it wont burn. Im sure additives exist to keep it from burning out at higher temp...
But starting with pure glow, that's where I would start.
Fwiw, the blue glows brighter, and longer than the green...
Im under the impression the blue holds up better at higher temps. I love the blue/aqua , I have no idea what the raw blue power is tho.
Fwiw, I stand 36" in front of a 7000cfm 36" belt drive fan. I would never risk whatever off gasses comes from trial and error.
PLEASE BE SAFE!
Pure is a relative tee this day in age.

really though the stuff the guy is already making is already comparable and works real good .. Other wise I have a feeling your going to need a ball mill and a lot of R and D.

Thanks everyone!
I've sent a message to boroglow to know if they sell photo luminescent pigments but they wouldn't answer.

Re: photoluminescent glass blowing pigments
This is Jason from BoroGlow I did email you a response to the fact that we only sell finished ready to use borosilicate glow in the dark glass. It took
Me 2-1/2 years to get it to
work correctly. While it may seem your first batches work I highly suggest making some projects and letting them sit on a shelf for 6 months before releasing whatever you come up with. I had some pieces crack after 3 months ect so I knew it was not ready yet. I now know it works great and is reliable.
Best of luck can't wait to see what you come up with

So very true . That strontium is some seriously chaotically unstable Shiite by itself.
But your glow powder works like butter. Can't figure that out for the life of me.

What I was saying is that it's better to buy the product that is proven to work over trying to recreate one yourself and taking on years of research and developement.
