Default First post, first set of goggles

Hey everyone! Been lurking here for a bit checking out everyone's fantastic glasswork and thought I'd toss in something a bit different. I've only been lampworking since last summer but it's hooked me bad enough that I've just bought my own torch and started gathering equipment instead of borrowing from my pushers, ah, fellow glass enthusiasts.

Anyways, I got to the point where I wanted my own eye protection and I'm a hands-on kinda person, plus being in the SCA and knowing some leatherworking, I decided to give goggles a shot. Bought some lenses and got to work, I'm going to dye them later (turns out veg tanned leather undyed looks creepy as hell when being worn, it's a bit Texas Chainsaw Massacre looking) Gave them a test run last night and actually fit quite comfortably, especially over the ears (which was my biggest issue with other glasses I've worn)

What's really nice is that they're deep enough that if I ever start working boro, I can stack the green lenses I have in with the didymium.

Much appreciated! I wasn't exactly sure on how to start with them or if they'd work, but they seem to do the job!

Thanks for the welcome, I look forward to gleaning what I can from everyone and showing off my feeble attempts in return.

I was thinking dark brown, but then the temptation to do something wild like this bracelet I made pops up:

...Nah I'll probably go dark brown. Maybe the next one I make will be more interesting.

Those are very cool, I'd leave them raw. Welcome to the group, we're looking forward to seeing your glass work too!

I'm with you. Frankly, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre look is likely to give a viewer a more accurate impression.

Thanks for the welcome! I started a thread with my stuff. Right now I'm just doing soft glass beads. Boro looks fantastic and I'd love to sculpt, but I can't swing that kind of money.

Alright, got them dyed up. If I was going to do a good job I would have dyed them before stitching, but since I wasn't sure they'd work at all I'm not too upset with how they turned out. Will definitely be making a second set soon.

They look rad! I agree though, contrasting stitching would make them pop some more.

And onto Mark 2! I made several improvements to this one, none of which are really interesting unless you're into leatherworking. In any case, they look better and more importantly, fit better. I actually like having the sideguard flaps, not only does it block distracting flare from other torches (I'm usually with a group of people when lampworking) but it's a bit of extra eye protection from shattering rods.
