i feel your pain hippi.

i made a big piece last night that i worked on for almost 8 hours , only to make a fuckin retard move and not follow protocol.
i ended up with the whole thing hittin the bench after the crack i chased zipped around the entire circumfrence and poof.
fuckin glass gods. i may be able to salvage it but i will have to refigure the approach.

all we can do is keep givin it our all.

your work is for sure moving ahead quite quickly. you are bound to have some issues when you are pushing your boundries all the time.

hippi,

I would've skipped putting the image marb on the bottom of the up-section.
Just a big heat sink right there, throwing off the way it holds onto heat while out of the kiln.

I'm just throwing that out there because I made my buddy a small bub, and I kept having to chase cracks at the bottom of the can next to the marb.

Eventually, I peeled it off and finished the piece. I ended up sticking the marb on last and it all worked out.

It's hard for me to do that, seeing where the bridge was and not doing anything about it until the end.

Keep it up.

ya it first cracked on the inline section not the upline...the reason i put the marble on there was cause there was a gong joint on the bottom so the marble isnt welded to flat glass i popped a hole the size of the marble so it wouldnt peel off lol (last piece i put the marble on it peeled off) thats why i popped the hole to weld and it worked well...but the marble still cracked cause after the inline can cracked i just put it on the bench to cool and crack on its own lol pissed me off...but o well i make another but a lil smaller...

oh and i finally got my truck fixed so now i dont have to try and make a k-tank last 2 weeks lol...

and i havent been fishing to much...waiting for it to get a lil colder so the lakes start stocking trout so i can go after those 12lb+ largemouth bass lol might hit up the jetties soon though i got a lot of salt water gear to use and loose lol

Gotta hit up Cabrillo Beach. There's some big things swimming all around that kelp there.

I was out kiting there mid-Sept, and everytime I rode over the kelp, big things would get flushed out and back in.

Calicos, Bonitos, and Mackerel. We love to see the macks on the surface, easy to catch and they make great bait for the Bonitos.

the dome top doesnt go with the bub i just used it for a tester lol...and it works pretty good..im suprised on the difference in using a small oil rig vs tube...the next bub will need to have a lil longer downstem though lol but luckly no water hit the lips just needs more water then i like..

10-27-2010, 11:10 PM
What sorta order do you go about to putting a mouthpiece on like that? Do you blow the bubble, weld it onto the can, then bend it? Or do you completely make the mouthpiece before welding it on?

steak351
10-28-2010, 12:21 AM
i wanted to ask the same about the steps

ModderXtr
10-28-2010, 01:24 AM
yeah I cant figure that part out, i can seal a joint and downstem into the can, but after that :o:

hippi
10-28-2010, 08:54 AM
hey guys thanks for the comments as for putting the bub together...

i blow the bubble for the base of the bub then swtich my blow tube to the bottom of that bubble... and drop my down stem thru the top... then add glass joint or push bowl....then pop hole for the mouth piece and weld it on...remove blowtube and flatten can

peace out

steak351
10-28-2010, 09:33 AM
ahh i thought about having the blowtube at the bottom, thank you very much

kind regards frank

FredLight
10-28-2010, 10:50 AM
One can also blow the bubble at the bottom without having to change sides with the tube.

Just punty up to the downstem side, blow out the part where the blowtube attaches to the can, remove punty, add downstem, blow hole for stem, etc.

Hey hippi, i like that compact design. I'd watch the weld, it looks like a shear point to me. Just what I can see from here.

Oh, yea, I'd hit that. Lol.

ModderXtr
10-28-2010, 12:01 PM
No i can make the can fine. I just take the gong joint and put a maria in it, then flare open some tubing and weld the maria in all around to the edge of that tube and i've got the downstem and the joint all sealed in one step.

I meant the bubble on the end of the mouthpiece. Do you blow that bubble first, then pop the hole and weld it to the can of the bub, and then bend the mouthpiece? Or do you blow the bubble, then bend the mouthpiece, then pop the hole and weld it on? or somethin else?

FredLight
10-28-2010, 01:24 PM
Sorry Modder, was'nt referring to you. You can do it both ways, but I suggest you take your second route.

That bend comes out cleaner if you can keep it pressurized while doing the bend.

I was originally talking to hippi. He mentioned blowing out the can, then switching blowtube to can's bottom. Can be done in one blowtube, without the switch.

hippi
10-28-2010, 05:12 PM
ya fredlight is proly right lol...i tend to do things the hard way... i know what u mean about the weld...it does look like it could shear...its welded on there good i just shoulda bridged it and heated the crap outta it and blew it out a lil...well on to the next one lol

Do you use graphite tape to hold your joints into the holder? If you dont you really should, never had anything fall out after giving it a nice twist putting it in with a piece of graphite tape in between. I use female joints instead of a graphite tool though but it should still work.

i use the graphite holding tool and i twist as well as push the shit out of the blank when i am inserting it originally.

sometimes it takes quite a bit of force to actually twist and pull it out of holder when i am finished.

in the past i have used newspaper and or newsprint type paper with good results when i was using an actual joint for the holder part.

every now and then , i would melt too close and tag it or distort it, so i invested in the graphite holders and i like then alot more.

Nice shape and patterns hippi!
It looks like there's a hole in the stem and can weld. Once you've got the pieces welded and the can braced to the blowtube, when I get a hole I usually coil up a clear stringer or dot to fill the gap and blast the weld with the hole side down to smoothen it out.

when i put a bridge on ,i use my hand torch and make sure that weld is really nice, so i don't risk a crack. wherever the brigde touches the piece ,ends up with a lil trail of clear dots, or i'll put a mib over the spot where the bridge was

yea if your not bleeding your not putting your self into it enough...lol but when you bridge i always try and make it on a little marb of color or clear that ive put on there for design so i can weld it in and not deform the piece. also if it cracks it will break off at the marb and not shoot a crack through your piece. or you can bridge to where you will put the carb at so you can pop it where you took off the bridge but it will tend to give you more of the craking problems if its not welded in nice and smooth. just a couple ideas for you to try out man your work will soar leaps and bounds after you gain some confidence in your bridging skills!

Hippi, you should go with the upper vents cause heat rises.

hippi
12-01-2010, 12:14 AM
Lol ya my buddy saw it somewhere and bought it for me..

As for the lower vent..ill. still have a hood above my work bench it would just get routed down to The vent.... so I don't have to cut any holes...I think nerds studio was vented like that..I got a 1600 cfm fan..500 more cfm then I had b4... I built my bench today now just need ducting and a hood

FredLight
12-01-2010, 03:39 PM
My hood is routed down to the floor vent as well with a 2350cfm fan.

Only problem is the exhausted air tries to pull a reach around and go back in the front of the garage. I have a box-fan directing it away from the door now.

I used to do my venting tests with burning damp paper, this time I used a "safe-n-sane" smoke bomb. The smoke doesn't dissipate as fast, and you can trace it further.

Be sure to clue in the neighbors when you do such a test, keep them from freaking out unnecessarily.

ExpG5 turns green in the kiln. Also, the expg5 can stand to be thinned down with clear. It's super super dark otherwise. The dichro separates into the threads as you heat it. I usually use a quarter to half inch square for a dicro pendant. Don't put the coated side in the flame and rage your oxy until it's encased

thanks for the tips ill try the dicro out tomrrow.. heres the dish i made with the exp green.. expgreen over white and dotted in clear

frillcappa
01-26-2011, 02:12 PM
good work hippi, I hate tagged downstems! I cant imagine doing it on a worked bub that took forever to make... so your saying that you would rather make it a removable downstem when you say you hate fixed stems? i always considered a fixed stem like the 90* bent kinda one

hippi
01-26-2011, 04:51 PM
ya when i was saying fixed i meant not removable... a removable one would be easier quicker and better, cleaning, less welds plus with oil rigs somepeople like getting there reclaim and with fixed downstems its a no go....but idk i havent tried to make removable ones yet so we will see how it goes

Dom
01-26-2011, 09:04 PM
Well then you might as well give up on making bubs period cuz most have fixed stems lol.

Nah dont give up just practice it takes some skill to do good downstems but it will be a great skill to have when you making big heady shit

yeah hippi the downstem and shaping the bottom of can have been my evil nemesis behind the torch too.
i am finding it takes a bit more planning to get stem correct length and can right squattiness(for lack of better word) than i originally thought.

once we get that the rest is butta.

looks good man. now go make another...but plan it out a little more on the details before you start.

Before I registered here I saw your lil wigwag pendant vid on youtube, then I got to see what else you were doing....where you came from and where you are now in just about a year. Props for your aggressive learning style and pushing yourself to make some (what looks to be) fun stuff to make. Can't wait to start doin some custom slides and downstems personally. Keep it up man!

when your eyeing your downstem size i always go a finger shorter then i first though, so if i do fuck up the bottom of the can or what ever i have that extra inch leway. ive only made like 4 or five drop stem ones. worked for me though!

yea, This is a good idea, just play it safe and give youself a half inch leeway, and then you just have to flattten the bottom more if you dont like the gap between the diffuser and the bottom of can. gl with the next one dog

B-Rye-oNeR
01-27-2011, 10:08 PM
Iv'e started doing my "fixed" down stems putting the tube in the can about halfway down, when doing a push and a flat spot usually works well. IF no push then no more than 3/4 of the way in. seems to be a good rule. ....At least it was clear! flame on.

Rosentech
01-28-2011, 10:31 AM
Make them bubbler can bases a little wider so you have more to smoosh. It's easier to have a big bottom and flatten it till its just the right distance from the downstem. And the wider the base the LESS you have to smoosh it for it to be super stable.

Does that makes sense??

Lookin good though, keep makin more!!!

first try at a tree perc..no jig just rubber bands....found out quick though that the ends of the percs should be closed off or plugged lol hot air in the face..the next one im just gonna close them off and cut it to open them.. thats why the percs are so long i was gonna cut them to length

bridge it up on that bub and work that weld in and it should be all good on that little bub. i find that bridging from a little marb on the piece to a little marb on the blowtube makes it way easier put on the bridge and welded in, and not crack your piece. love the look of the adventure over unob thats pretty dope, and the horns are looking good as well! keep on flowin!:D

the bub was bridged while i was makin it and the weld is welded good i just think it will look nicer with a section inbetween the mouth piece and can.. i think some bridging will kill the look of some pieces...if done right it can look good but just a lil section of rod conncected to the mouth piece to the can would look a lil cheezy

...they are talking about temporary bridges after you make the initial seal...bridge from ur blowtube on the mouthpiece...to your can somewere...than you can really heat up and blow out your weld so its smooth......i bridge from blowtube to blowtube...as i leave a blow tube on each piece...than remove after you have worked in your weld...

shits looking goood though...keep it up

on your handle for the mouthpiece set up a bridge. then plug the female joint with a male joint that has punty on it. after you attatch can and stem, bridge them together. work your weld. that will help you alot. although looks decent from what pic shows. peace

you can cut that end off with a dremel with the diamond disk cutter on it. there like 15 bucks for the bit, but well worth it. the way I do it when i make diffusers and stuff. I use an aquarium air hose, and valve, under a buck at the aquarium store. Just set up a drip line with a gallon of water on a chair, put a pan on the ground to collect the dripping water, and just cut the glass under the drip.

nice good idea...but a tile saw is easier haha...and in my case straighter lol
