Melting Pot 2013 Marble Exchange!
- sign up is OPEN 01/21/13
Yes, you really should read ALL the information posted below.
Please post in this thread if you want to be included. The participant list will be updated as people sign up.
You must also send me a PM with your:
Real Name / MP Name
Shipping information
Contact information - email address (phone # optional but preferred)
I will not add you to the participant list until I have this information. (I learned last year that this will save me an unbelievable amount of time typing the shipping addresses at the end of this exchange if I do it as we go along.) The personal information will not be posted online.
This is going to be DIFFERENT from many other exchanges and will hopefully ensure that everyone gets a marble back for each one they send in.
You get back the same number of marbles that you submit. They can all be different or similar to each other. It is up to you.
The minimum number of allowable marbles is 4 (four). The maximum will be determined by the number of participants who sign up. When the exchange is closed, the maximum number of allowable marbles will be 1/3 of the number of participants. If 30 people sign up then the maximum number of marbles you can send in will be 10. Any number of submissions between the minimum and the maximum are permissible. You will get the same number of marbles that you sent in but from different artists. The exchange will be canceled if less than 6 people sign up!
Sign up now!
PLEASE READ ALL THE RULES!
Rules
• marbles MUST be made by you
• Anything cracked WILL BE RETURNED!
• minimum of four (4) to maximum is to be determined by the number of participants as follows:
10 sign up would mean 4 max
15 sign up would mean 5 max
20 sign up would mean 7 max
25 sign up would mean 8 max
30 sign up would mean 10 max
35 sign up, 12 max
More than that would make me crazy so we’ll stop there.
I will also maintain a waiting list for use if anyone drops out.
There is no penalty if you do decide to skip the exchange (even after signing up) but please be courteous to other participants and let your decision be known so that all who want to play can have a spot.
• please post pictures of your marbles and encourage others to sign up!
• you do not have to wait until the deadline to send your package. The sooner you send your submissions the better!
• see below for other information
Checklist before sending package in:
• Send in four (4) to the maximum (see above) entries and you will receive the same number of marbles back
• Mail to Marina Bonaventura, 1002 Anns Court, Asheboro, NC 27205
• IDENTIFY each marble with your name AND Melting Pot name
• IF YOU KNOW YOUR MARBLES WILL SAFELY FIT INTO A SMALL USPS FLAT RATE BOX you may send $6.50 in cash, check, paypal gift, or money order. This will be used for the return flat rate USPS shipping box with a tracking number. For most of you this will not apply because of the diameter of your marbles. For you and for anyone outside of US you will owe actual postage of package back to you. When the marbles are sorted and packed you can send cash, check, paypal gift, or money order to cover return shipping.
• If you have questions, post them in this thread or PM me.
• Marbles must be postmarked by APRIL 15, 2013 if you live in the US and postmarked by APRIL 01, 2013 if you live anywhere but the US (that includes Canada!)
You don't have to commit to a specific # of marbles when you sign up. Just keep the number in line with the rules above and send them by the deadline. Shipping sooner is not a problem (in fact it is encouraged) but if you want the maximum # of trades you will have to hope the maximum # of people sign up. The idea is to be able to get marbles from a variety of people with minimum fuss and bother and to be sure that you will get back goodies for what you send out. This format has worked well for me as a participant before. It's quite a task on the hosting end!
When you make a marble you plan to exchange go ahead and post a picture in this thread. You aren't spoiling anyone's surprise because you won't know who among the other artists will be the recipient. Plus it will encourage others to participate.
If you have questions, post them in this thread and I'll try to answer.
It would be nice to have a real name in this thread (at least first name but last too if you want). So please post it when you sign up if it's not in your sig line.

So just to clear any confusion, unless it is just me and I am missing something obvious, which totally could be the case, can you only submit one marble if you choose to, or is there a 4 marble minimum to be able to participate?
Thanks!

Four marbles minimum this year. Remember they don't all have to be the same size/complexity/whatever. Round and un-cracked are the minimum requirements.
Thanks for asking. I'm sure if it wasn't clear for you, others wondered as well.
Spaces are going fast, we are up to 22 out of a maximum of 35 participants. (not counting waiting list spots)

A little rusty with the marbles but the first 4 came out alright! (each approx 1.75") Going to shoot for the maximum number allowed. Also kind of wondering if anybody makes larger marbles (3-4" or so) for this? I want to make some larger ones and kind of hoping to maybe get some in return if I do....

Notsure, I will make some largish marbles and submit some of them. All of my marbles won't be 3" but I will try to get a basic 3"- 4" vortex and send it in so go ahead and make largish marbles without fear of no one else submitting too. Maybe ours can be exchanged...

Here is my next marble for the exchange. It is a two in fumed vortex with planets. I think the person who gets this will really like it. I used a very dark translucnet blue so that inside without a lighht on it it looks like a solid blue backing with dot. If you put a light behind it though it illuminates the inside vortex blue. I wish I could show it in a picture, iyt just won't turn out.

Hi everyone. I wanted to get your thoughts on what I wanted to enter into the marble swap. Because I use soft glass, my marbles won't be as large as you who use Boro. So I wanted to send you 3 of my marbles for each person on my give to list instead of trying to make large marbles out of the glass I have and sending one. Below is a picture of what I have been working on for the past 2 weeks. These are made from Kugler German soft glass. I tried to get an organic look (Earth tones) to the marbles using both reactive and non lead glass rods. They are about 3/4" in diameter.
What I need to know is will this be ok with you to go ahead and send in these marbles for the swap. If not, let me know now so I can make one marble instead.
Thanks

Please voice your opinions. I'll go with the group vote on this question.
Sorting marbles for this exchange is a nightmare! Imagine the number of people times the number of marbles....could be 420 marbles to swap. Now, don't get me wrong....it is a very nice and beautiful nightmare, but still a very daunting task. Adding another factor, multiple marbles for one, would add to the difficulty. If only one person does it, I think it would be okay, but I can see it getting out of hand. Rich, I love your marbles and treasure the one I received in the exchange last year and would love to get another one this year....no matter the size.......remember.......they say "size doesn't matter"
Joemess
02-20-2013, 04:24 PM
Rich, I already see one that I want.
I am all for doing what you say, however I will second the poster above me that says size does not matter. Those marbles have a classic look that is quite honestly difficult for me to achieve in boro. The only soft glass marbles I have tried to make have typically going through a rapid anneal cycle in the water bucket....

You guys are SO nice!
I will package a 3-group marble set times 12 packages for the swap so it will be easy to keep them accounted for.
Andrew - you made me laugh! Love the quick anneal cycle action! To make these marbles I used a white base glass and applied the two types of glass and used a blending technique I am working on to get the "swirl" type patterns. Using soft glass does make it a lot easier as I don't have to power up the heat for the glass to melt to start with and keep it burning SO hot to get the glass to move.
There are good things about both soft glass and Boro and there are also bad things about both when working the glass in the flame. I have made Boro marbles but prefer soft glass marbles. For me, it's a balance of keeping the glass hot enough to work verses being too cold to thermal shock - I love this challenge!
Lysa - if more than myself send multiple marbles, the keeping things straight will be easy IF the person bundles package of marbles grouped together. Holding the bundle would be the same as holding one marble - kinda.

Being retired, I have tons of time to torch. When I make 3/4" marbles, I usually spend 5 hours (with breaks) and get about 40 marbles completed. I use my calipers on the white base glass then add color. Making these, I spent 2 weeks totally because I made other marbles along with these but I used Morano glass instead of Kugler. Both are soft glass but Kugker is 96 and Morano is 104, Looking at the pictures of other great marbles that have been posted, I assume they most all are made using Boro.

Well, I just switched over to full time lampworking, so marbles are on the back burner until I get production running. Marbles take me for flippin' ever, especially if I am backing them with something nice. I just got done doing a three day vortex, I did a three color dot stack and tried using like eighht small pin wheels spun into one large pin wheel over the lens. It turned out ok, but it's sloppy. I need some help with pin wheels and nobody around me does them(that I know of)

I think the idea that a marble has to be signed with a full name is laughable and unrealistic and totally NOT what is intended.
I'm guessing you read this: " * IDENTIFY each marble with your name AND Melting Pot name"
That doesn't mean sign each marble with that info, just include a slip of paper with each marble with that info on it.
Sign your marbles (if you do, and you should) with whatever normal signature you'd use.... mine is (almost) always: DSH 'xx

yeah... tax day SUCKS at the post office.
Maybe Marina overlooked that and can extend the shipping deadline till tomorrow? I'm pre-printing my shipping label on the post office website, so I think I will be fine, but I'll report back on my local post office situation. I'm going at like 12:30 to catch EVERYONE on their lunch break.... should be fun.

Ok, ok tomorrow for shipping will be fine.
Brad, I seem to recall shipping was pretty fast last year. We can wait.
Rogue, the name you are looking for is Losiwells. He had to back out of the exchange this year but hopefully will be back for next year's exchange. (also worth the wait)
Akmewon - those nine are the over-achievers who sent theirs in early.
Slips of paper, tags, business cards or sigs on the marbles themselves are fine. What sucks is if the package has no internal or external identifiers other than the return address which (other than city and state) doesn't match any reat name or TMP name on the list. (I did figure it out though.)

I got mine out. post office line wasn't THAT bad at 1:00, but it was probably a 30+ minute wait if I had to stand there.
Use usps.com and print a shipping label, or use the automaic postal center things if you got 'em... like an ATM with a scale, you put your box in and swipe a card and it prints out a shipping label with the postage on it... no reason to wait an hour in line.

I'm sorry everyone, but like I told Glassdoc, life kinda got in the way. Before i knew it the deadline was here so I had to withdrawal from the exchange. I was so looking forward to this. If anyone wants to I will do a mini exchange just let me know. Glassdoc, like I said expect a marble from me just for your time and effort for doing this exchange. Thanks again and sorry for backing out at the last minute. Damn deadline!... ;-)

I hear ya on life in the way. Its a constant battle to find time to get things done. I finnished my #4 and #5 marb sunday night, the best ones I had ever made.
I know they are not anywhere close to the skill of you others in the exchange. I couldn't get much done before my homefill setup was complete, damn oxy man was robbin me. These marbs use a lot more oxy then I was used to, my phantom sucks the O2 (love it). Anyhow, as I'm filling my first tank, My wife goes into labor(not cause of the coolness of free oxy). I got her to the hospital and eventually had my 3rd baby boy, working on a hockey team, lol. So now I have a full tank and too busy to use it, This was march 16th. Things calmed down and I was able to start torchin again, wow, it's awsome not having to worry about oxy consumption, finally getting to burn.
Friday mornin I get a call as I'm goin to work(machinist full time, glass hobby/job). My wifes mother passed away, she was not doing good for the last few months.
So I busted out some of the best vortex's I've made yet sunday night. Inspired by life and loss of. We are all good, The kids are too young to worry and my wife is getting along fine.
I just want to say to anyone who dropped out, I totally understand. I almost did too. It seems like when you need to get something done, something always stands in the way, murphys' law? gremlins? can't be karma cause I'm good on that :chilling:
Peace, hope my marbs don't suck too bad. Hope they are round enough, lol, I know one doesn't roll too good but it looks cool :)

I was talking to a contemporary marble maker friend of mine that lives in Arizona (not a member here) and told him about the marbles I made for the exchange.
You see, I am worried that there may be some people that receive them that think that what I did doesn't equal what they did for the exchange because of their size.
I understand that so I sent plenty of them for the person to receive 3 or more (depending on what our hostess sends) of my marbles that were made using science rather than putting colored glass rods together.
My friend suggested i post this and if anyone is not satisfied with what I sent in, I should get their snail mail address and send them a "regular" marble.
The reason I wanted to exchange these science driven marbles with you is to let you see in person the result of 8 months of study. The Earth tones you'll see are from only using 2 rods of glass over a white base glass. I used red, orange, yellow, green, blue and lavender colored rods but only 2 at a time. You won't see bright colors on these marbles. What you will see is organic tone colors because of the results of the science of the glass when the rods were originally made.
Anyway, if you do get my marbles in the exchange and are not happy, please PM me your address and I'll be happy to send you another marble.
Thanks

Hey Marina, next time you're taking pictures of marbles could you take a bunch of steps back and take some shots of how you have your photo set up situated? These are some of the better photos of marbles I've seen, and there's a huge range of marble sizes and types that makes it even trickier.... also, what camera are you using?
The camera is brand spankin new and I don't really know how to use all the bells and whistles. It's a Nikon D5200 with the stock 18-55 lens and built in flash. Cheapo light box (feebay for $15 or something like that) frosted acrylic risers set on blue sweep and an acrylic stand. I tried any number of external lighting combinations and remain frustrated. I think the pics are ok but not yet what I'm looking for. I signed up for a photography course at the local community college for the summer term. Yay. Maybe by next year I'll really know how to do it "right". On the plus side, I took pictures of all the 265 marbles in the exchange so far this year. So I'm getting some practice. Don't even ask about photo editing software. Way confusing so I'm just re-sizing and cropping to post here.
You shouldn't feel silly with all the boxes and marbles you've got I'm surprised your not pulling your hair out.
Again thank you for doing all of this I know we all appreciate it and I hope you like the pendant I was saving it for a special occasion and felt you deserved it.

The macro is very nice but I was having trouble using it for marble pictures because of the very limited depth of field.
There has to be a better lighting solution than the one I'm using. The external flash, even with a diffuser, creates big ugly reflections.

With dichro, use less light.... no flash.
With the vortexes turn them a little tiny bit to one side, or use a light set off to the side to get the shadows...

How may possible combinations are there for 271 marbles?
I don't exactly know, but I seem to be working my way through them all.
Trying to make sure I don't inadvertently send anyone their own work back or two of another artists. Gaaaaah.

I just opened my box. I'm thrilled with what I received. They are all great. However, the best thing for me is getting work from Mr. Clause.
There is a thread on LE where he breaks out the idea of holding your Maria upside down during compression. That idea made me question the boundaries I had been taught. I mostly start with implosion now, but every compression gets some upside down time.
Mr. Clause, you are a true artist. I'm SUPER stoked to own some of your work. They will sit in good company.
Now I just need one of your flowers. If you still mess with them that is. I don't own many soft mibs. Actually, only three...

Well, my mailman steal packages from me and has done it numerous times. I think he has struck again because my box said it was supposed to be delivered yesterday. I am really upset. I hope that SOB delivers them today. I have reported his ass directly to the postmaster general 3 times and they do nothing(I even have surveillance tapes of him not delivering when he has claimed to) . If I don't get that package today I'm going to the local news. This is some BS!

Don't stress it, Albuquerque is a big sorting hub for the southwest. USPS and FedEx both have major facilities here (cheap land, cheap airport rates, major Interstate crossing I-25/I-40, cheap labor, stable weather). Plus I am on a commercial route, not a residential route, I've found parcels (boxes) get to my shop about a day faster than they get to my house. It could also be that my zipcode for my shop is in the same zipcode as the Airport mail sorting center, and my house isn't, meaning there's one more transfer when it gets to town before it can get to my house, but comes straight from airport to my shop.
It's not uncommon for things to get to me 1 or 2 days before the estimates (my tracking says it will be here by end of the day today, I got it early yesterday).

Well, mailman has come and gone and only dropped off one bill. GOD DAMNIT!!!
I was checking the tracking info and it just said it left PA. Why is my package for Fl In Pa? This is exactly how my torch got lost last time, went to the same sort facility and everything. Going postal is no longer for postmen.

I'm pretty sure I know what happened because it has happened before. The mailman feels a box that seems like it has something expensive in it, he jacks it, and marks the package as return to sender, but the package never actually gets scanned.
I know it sounds unbelievable, I had to listen to this non sense in person. So I ask, "how is my package showing as departing this destination?" It's not the actual package they tell me, it's the bulk code that it was assigned to. So the actual package isn't in it, it's just a phantom. With my torch I was following it all over the country and then like 45 days later I think it showed up back at the senders house beat to shit.
The story goes, the mail man delivered it to the wrong address but the person there signed for it, but didn't accept it.... yeah sounds legit right?
So supposedly this mail man takes my package back to the post office and just dumps it in the return bin and forgets to scan that he had done so. Well, coincidentally the sorter forgot or missed scanning it as well.
I was doing this all the day this package supposedly got delievered because I was watching the tracking very carefully. When that thing said signed and delivered I ran straight to the post.
I was on the phone with somebody from the post for the next 45 days daily and they gave me such a run around. They also told me since it was insure that I had one of three choices. I could have the package investigated and tracked, I could claim the insurance, but they won't even start investigating a claim for 60 days, and if they deem that you were at fault they will not pay you, or you can have you post man investigated.
Now I was told by several different people at several different office that this is standard operating procedure. You have the choice of one and one only. You can not combine. Either you try to find it, or you might get your money, but definitely not both.
I wish I knew how many other things that I wasn't expecting got stolen.
istandalone24/7
05-09-2013, 11:08 AM
damn that really sucks. much like cops and doctors, you should be able to trust your mail carrier 100%. usps should take that shit more seriously.
