View Full Version : Are you a nasty little bench?

I had a setup almost just like that when I first started... major/minor burner on a table, with some marble slabs and vermiculite.

Talk about nasty though, turned out some random cat was coming by and peeing in the vermiculite tray when I wasn't around. I was wondering WTF the smell was one day after putting in a hot piece, until I put it all together...

That's up on the second floor, right?

:dieslaugh:dieslaugh

baahahahaha, oh man. At least you didn't pull a "finished piece" out of the vermiculite that wasn't your work.

yeah I'm up on the second floor (and that's why I have a cover on my vermiculite bucket) I went outside and burned all day one beautiful sunday and basically got to know a lot of my neighbors. no one gives a damn. apparently I'm surrounded by hipsters, strippers, and mexicans, oh my. everyone was really cool, and i handed out samples of my work to anyone who was interested, to grease the wheels a little.

my setup has matured quite a bit, but I'm out of commission until tomorrow because the apartments are repaving everyone's patio and I have a giant wooden "X" nailed over my patio door. I'll post a new pic when I get it all put back together.

Ronin

now that my patio is finished, I've got my bench back up and running. it's a lot more effecient and leaves me more space on my patio. still pretty clean imo.

It's a rare thing to see my bench this clean but the wife helped my clean up the shop today. About 80% of what's in the jars was laying on the bench, I should of taken a before photo.

I usually do that, too. This time, I gave a shop mate a few sticks of fun colors that she'd never tried and some shorts in trade for cleaning my work space.

Please excuse the low res camera phone pics..... but I keep my bench clean because I live in the space also. I do not want glass shards making there way into my bed area and stuff like that. Also it is so small I keep all my tools in a tool box and put only the ones I need for each piece on the bench. I will have my digital camera for pics in a day or so. I am waiting for a wireless adapter so I can get my new computer online.

Looks like a lot of oxygen. I like my new bravo. It uses a lot less gas and I have a limited amount of space for gas cylinders. Plus the driveway is too narow for the oygen delivery truck. So I have to truck it in myself with my own truck. Which takes time and if your busy with orders can take away a lot of time from the torch.

Ya know... There was a time where I kept my bench spotless! Then started working 8hr plus days on the torch and
decided, ppppppssssssshhhhhhhh... screw it! No cigs, no bad stringers, just all the normal glass tubing, tools, rods, etc...
Then had to work on my wifey's bench which is the most discustingly clean and organized thing I've ever set eyes on! And
guess what... Couldn't find a damn thing I was looking for on it!

...........I built this shop in oct. 2011 , posts on the table only get in the way when break'in down tube. Its in a old masonic temple(25,000 sq ft) , there is a full size gym upstairs on the third floor , and a full theater on the top (5th) . the one apt. is a good friend of mine with a full stainless pro kitchen. rent is cheap ,party's are big , couldn't ask for more .
...........sorry for older, poor, phone pics , shop looks almost the same . bench is clean in the am , a mess by midnight.

I'm setting this up by myself and it's not done yet. Those tanks are temporary until the liquid shows up. There is a room behind the cement wall where the loading dock is. That's where the gases are going.

This an extremely entertaining thread! Great just to see the everyones setups regardless of if they are clean or dirty. It is just cool to see where other people get their work done :) I am definitely a fan of keeping things clean on a regular basis although a bit of clutter isn't bad. I find it much more difficult to concentrate on getting work done when things get out of hand with the build up of stuff and also much more likely to cut yourself on some random scrap glass.

SwanieMix
12-16-2014, 09:41 AM
Yeah they are a bit close, and my ventilation is a home made type thing my dad made to remove fumes while he recycled antifreeze plus it's in a drafty garage already. It's not ideal but I moved back to my parents when my lease ran up on my last house because I was looking for a place to open my business and was hoping to find a place that had an apartment attached. Well, probation stopped me from opening my business so right now I'm looking for an RV or trailer of some sort to set my studio up in before I rent a house. I plan on traveling alot in the near future so a house isn't my biggest concern. I'm working with what I have. I will be getting a professional exhaust system or having my dad build me one once I get the RV. He's a mechanical engineer.

This is the second floor of my shop. The lathe and other benches are downstairs and also not the cleanest.

I've been making an effort to put my tools away after I finish for the day and to clean up my mess the day after before starting for the day. Been on the torch for ~10 hours roughly.

What are all the mirrors for behind the torch? Anyway here is my bench, I try and keep it about this clean. I have also been trying to get the block clear of half finished things.

makes it where you can see the other side of what your blowing into so you make it the right size and don't get bubble trash, and so people don't scare the crap out of you.

while im at it here's my desk, pretty messy im gonna build a new desk since i just got my new bravo.70994

So many tanks next to benchs over the years of this thred, obviously not too many people have problems but my tanks stay out side

im waiting for my other EX 20 oxygen concentrator to come in and all the brass to hook everything up so i wont have tanks in the room or hoses on the ground. Between all the people ive asked at Wale apparatus or Welding supply, ive never heard of a case of an oxygen tank exploding( acetylene if you lay it on its side explodes) . And i was told its good to have the propane tank somewhat close so you can shut it off quickly.

Technically, It's illegal in all 50 states to store propane inside...

Yea i guess that's why my dad makes me put it on the side of the house when I'm done. I leave the oxygen tank if its empty

But you cant have it inside? or you have to store it outside? because storing it outside ok thats fine, but if you have to run a hose outside to a tank that seems like its possibly worse because then you cant shut it off if you need to.

Propane sinks out of the air. Creating a bad situation indoors.

it takes as little as 2% propane in the air to become explosive. That's not much at all. It likes to sink down low, where your appliances piolt lights like to be lit. Combine that with the "Y" splitters commonly used by most lampworkers. They are notoriously leaky even new right out of the box. The risk is much greater than one may think. The solution is relatively easy and cheap. Including a emergency shut off valve where it enters the building.

Acetiline will rise. Making it arguably safer indoors?

figure I it was time to add a picture of my shop for the winter. Working in front of the public makes me less of a slob. I like to have all the tools , and glass color for a project right on the bench for reference. It will still be messy at the end most times. (@ 42 degrees glens falls )

I love this thread. It gives me a chance to see so many ideas , and stations. I know some of you have upgraded. Let's see some updated pics!

I will be building a station against a wall of windows in the next few weeks. Its literally second floor over the water. Lake front , in Lake George NY. I was thinking a "U" shape bench looking out at the lake and mountains? Dock space for the boats. Unlimited torching hours. Right in the village. I will create a build thread. We are always looking for artist Who want to visit and melt at either location. Active or known t.m.p. Members are welcome ,if not preferred. Lake george by boat is indescribable.

this is looking south over " the narrows." Its about half way up the lake. ( 32 miles long)

The village is on South Bay. The new place is in one of the buildings you can just see over the water on the left.

^ so you are saying that you will be looking at that lake with boats at the dock in view from your work station? You better build your bench on the opposite wall...

Hard to believe people stilll think propane inside for any length of time is ok. Propane needs to be outside at all times.

I shuffled some stuff around, but it's still dirty.

So I bought a giant baking sheet to pretend like I cleaned...

(The baking sheet is really to keep my soft glass & boro separate, without actually clearing my bench. #lazy)

That is only a comparative mess. I will get a better pic of mine. I'm finally getting the hang of this forum (comparatively) as long as I don't lose all my info and such again.

My bench I think is the worst in this thread yet. I'm so busy I really don't see much point anymore. When I clean it looks like this two weeks later every time. Even my cold work station under the tv is piled with bubble wrap. Can't see my lap wheel or electroformer under there. Lol7982079821798227982379824

this has to be a gag, because I have a bunch of chickens, and I have to keep my shop door closed or they come inside and shit all over everything. Do you work with shit everywhere and on your glass, or did you just let them in for the picture?
