Vote if you keep your workbench clean or dirty, then show us a picture of your bench in the state that you generally keep it.

I can tell you from years of traveling around to others shops, that I am in the minority as far as maintaining a clean benches goes. I get a lot of shit for it too...lol.

I remember back to my childhood - my dad's workbench for his carpenter tools was always really well organized, clean, and well taken care of. I remember him always saying "A cluttered bench is a cluttered mind!" I guess that's one thing that always stuck with me.

First two pics are from 2005? when I lived and worked in OR.
UPDATE: Last two pics are from 2009 at my shop in CA.

This is how it looks as I come and go. Maybe not mid-session, but sometimes. When I'm done with various procedures and I take a safety break, I go into auto-cleanup mode, knocking off random trashy gathers and putting the rods/tools back. It's amazing what 30 seconds will do 5 times a day. 2-1/2 minutes? But that's how long it takes to pull two points...HAHA! It's all good! I'm not preaching! Rock out with your nasty selves!

i seems the only time my bench/shop gets cleaned is when i run out of oxygen. when i went to visit jeff and cristi i felt like a slob... the bench was really clean the whole time i was there (in my standards) but i think it was the sloppiest they have ever seen it. so i think im going to try (and try again) to follow suit and see how it effects my efficiency. i was once told that most artists have messy rooms don't know how true it is but i know my room is messy... doesn't seem to matter though cause i dont' know how much of an artist i am.

I have always kept my bench super neat, tidy, organized, but I recently quit doing that and have purpously been going for messy, as every other blowers place I have been to has a very messy bench and so I figure that maybe if I wasnt so concerned about keeping everyting organized, the messyness would let me be more free flowing, lax and thus more creative, we shall see

I posted this in another thread and someone linked to this thread so I think I'll try to keep it alive. Damn some of you are nasty mofos. My wife will be the first one to tell you that I am a total slob. My problem is that a messy room, workspace, whatever depresses me and makes me lazy. Since I am depressed AND lazy I do not have the urge to clean up. It's a nasty cycle. I do find that I work better when I have a clean organized workspace, be it my workbench for metalworking, my toolbox when doing my mechanic stuff, or my room whenever we want to test out some new failures I made at the glassworking bench (I'm still learning).

This is currently our workbench in progress. I have added toolholders to the front of the bench and plan to add storage under the bench and get rid of the scrap steel and other junk cluttering it up. I am still getting used to where I want things to be when I'm working so things are moving around. My water can is now on the left since I use my left hand to gather glass onto rods. Thing is I'm halfassed ambidexterous so I do some things better with my right hand and others with my left. Unfortunatly my left hand is having trouble learning how to spin glass without being retarded. But I digress....

ok now im showing off. but there is a good reason my bench is soooo anally clean. I have to clean off each peice of glass before Iuse it because when my sandblaster was set up, we were finding sand in al the finished product. I dont know if its our super ventilation, or what, but its been a long time, and I still have dirty marble issues if I dont keep it clean. hmmm.......
so is that clean enough to eat off of or what?!

WHen you sandblast the sand will get everywhere in the building, it is unavoidable. I have a huge exhaust blower in my sandblast room, it will literally suck the hat off your head. And the room is walled off from the rest of the building (building is 60' long) in a separate area and I still have sand everywhere.

Well after getting to work for a few months I have learned something, sharing a bench with a slob (no offence bud, you know who you are) blows. I'm not OCD about my bench but I have to have organization. On my right are the racks for raking rods, points, blowtubes, graphite pad, and an empty rack for color rods I am using at the moment. On my left is the rack for full color rods and a spot where all the used color rods go plus an area for handles and shorties that need handles. At the end of the day any prep work that needs done the next day when I start (shorties that need handles, blowtubes that need welded together, bits of 4mm or 6mm that need welded together, etc..) it all goes in front of the torch for the next morning.

Now when my friend comes over the bench is all nice and neat. Then my boy goes all tasmanian devil on it and the color rods on handles look like a game of pick up sticks. I did manage to train him to mostly put away the tools. There's busted glass everywhere if a piece happened to shatter on him. And it just regular chaos. I watch the guy work and he'll grab a tool out of the holder, use it, then rather than take 2 seconds to put the tool back in the holder it goes on top of all the color rods....then when he needs it again he's searching all over the bench for it :D and winds up spending more time looking for the tool than he would if he just put it back. :bangHead:

I will have to give him props though for welding about 4 doxen 4mm pieces ranging from 5" long to 8" long together before he finished up the last time. Think he felt guilty because I had almost 3 dozen points pulled for him when he showed up that day. I'll prolly have some before and after pics this weekend unless he reads this first heh

My bench is THRASHED, every damn day I walk in and say "oh I should clean this mess" then I fire up the torch and forget about my bench, that is until I can't find my tweezers or some other tool. The new issue of Glassline shows how destroyed my area is. N8 your pops was right - a cluttered mind is what I have. Frank Zappa had a quote that went something like "Having a clean work area allows you to be chaotic with your art." Now I feel like a dirtbag- Thanks for reminding me.

I allways vacum off the bench with a double filter shop vac before I start every day! I do This to ensure there is no glass dust from cuts and breaks also bubble trash can float around for days and that shit will kill you !Every time There is a bubble trash accident I stop and vacume it all up right away ASAP.If you have ever seen bubble trash break in a strong light you can see micro glass dust shards floating for alot longer than you would expect and once it settles it is easy to kick up off the bench if you do not properly clean up.I would strongly advise anyone who does not allready have a double filter shop vac to get one ,it is the best $100 you will ever spend to prevent silicosis. Having a clean work enviornment is just as important as a good set of glasses and a good ventilation system. When it comes to your health dont cut the corner. Get a good set of glasses ,a good exhuast system ,and a DOUBLE FILTER SHOP VAC so you can clean smalll glass shards before they end up in your lungs ! Make sure you get a double filter shop vac ,I would not try using a regular filter it could kick out alot of fine glass dust when the vac gets full !

nafglass
08-15-2008, 07:37 AM
This ^^ is a good idea especially for those of us who do blow thin bubbles. I try to avoid it as often as possible. My grandfather was a stone mason that died of silicosis. I'd like to avoid the same result but he was old school and never wore a mask when he should have. Anyway, can a regular shop vac be converted to a double filter?

hippi is your fan ducted in the back. It looks to me like whatever you are exhausting is just going into the garage, or could possibly be blown right back into your garage by the wind. You should consider putting a few feet of ducting on the back of that fan so, the ducted air will be sent outside and above the garage door header. That way the wind will take it elsewhere.

You don't want to use to much ducting, or have too many bends or the fan will not be utilized as well.

Also if you do decide to enclose your space you will def. need to bring in fresh air/make -up air to replace what you are exhausting. A sliding window would work well.

seems a bit narrow for my working comfort. i would be hitting the walls all the time with punties and blowtubes.

blackink
09-28-2010, 03:26 PM
It's 4 ft across, most of the time it works just fine. I usually break down tubes into 2-3 foot lengths and haven't had a problem. I guess I could pull out the concrete block if I need more punty room.

hashmasta-kut
09-28-2010, 07:14 PM
you have to break em down its no biggie, but if you all of a sudden need a rod or tube thats 5 feet long, its nice to just grab it and flame cut it if you have the urge.

also doing a tube pull raging your phantom i wonder if yer handles will be long enuff..

STROKER
09-28-2010, 07:40 PM
my blowtubes and punties are at least 20 inches long. add a 14 inch piece inbetween and you are mighty pressed for room. actually you will be working at an angle to fit in there.

my forearms couldnt take the abuse during a big melt on anything shorter than that.

blackink
09-28-2010, 08:01 PM
Stroker, I opted for the 3-wall'd hood design specifically for fuming, but I can see your reasoning trying to work a 14" piece. 12" punties and blowtubes are usually enough considering how much air I'm pulling with this hood design.

STROKER
09-28-2010, 08:08 PM
well here is my squirrels nest of a bench after 4 days working. damn thing gets nasty quick.

i too have a very large hood with two giant squirrel cages that will suck the chrome off a bumper hitch and actually sucks my flame into it sometimes but i still need long tubes and punties to keep the radiant heat off me.

glass guy, stroker is just speaking about the limits of how much heat you can take. i dont like burning my hands either, and its pretty much impossible with 18inch handles and a phantom raging. we are just trying to help from our own epxerience, not tell blackink he is a bad person, merely that most likely his workspace may be too narrow.

all you have to do is build a small wood shelf like 6x6x8 or 10 that you can mount to the front of the table to put your torch on, then your torch is out of the cubby hole, you will still be getting max venting of the gasses, but you won't be limited by the size of the glass you are working. you can attack your torch from multiple angles also, which makes some welds on bigger pieces easier

You don't need to, start yelling and swearing. Most newer automated systems will send you through immediately to a rep if if sounds like you are upset. Otherwise press 1, a good majority of the time you'll get to speak to a rep that speaks Spanish as a second language. Sometimes the wait queues are even shorter to speak with the Spanish speaking reps. And if they don't speak English well, they'll transfer you to another rep, and it'll still probably be quicker than waiting in the queue.

Wait, what were we talking about again?

i am not sure if you realize but most of your posts come off as quite bossy really. its not too likeable always going around and telling people what to do, especially IN CAPITALS..

when I first read Stroker's comment, I thought he was telling me that my setup was inadequate. But, I counted to 5 and tried to explain why my bench was designed that way. No hurt feelings here. I don't mind breaking tubes down and keeping my mess to a minimum. I actually wear kevlar arm protectors if I'm doing any serious tube prep.
Moral of the story?
Try not to assume, because that just makes an ass out of u and me. Can't we all get along?

Both the old and new bench are/were in enclosed porches. New one is much better. Concrete floor, much wider. Old shop had me working with my back against the wall. I am in the process of converting an out building. Will post pics when it is done. I will have a deeper bench.:bouncy:

I've never understood how assuming made an ass of the assumed upon and the assumer. Wouldn't it just be the assumer?

Glassguy, your posts hurt my eyes to read. Seriously, I'll lend you some periods and commas and properly capitalized words. You don't even have to return them.

Hi everyone I'm new here and have been lurking a bit. I built my own studio in my garage about 8 years ago. It only looks this clean becuase soon after I completed it I decided ot sell my house and would have random showings. I'm only posting this because I have been out of the loop for about the same amount of time and in the process of setting up a studio again. Figured this would be a good spot to log my first post.

I really can't remember. I have had it for a very long time... 6-7 years. I may have picked it up from another lamper here? I painted it purple myself. Sustainable designs has a SWEET toke set up, you can get it from them or Glasscraft.

I was the only person within a hundred miles at the time that made pipes. I had many wealthy clients that felt comfortable walking into the studio, presentation is everything in some instances. By no means did I pocess the skills that many of you'all do, but I was ok. I was set up so that when they came in, they could pick all there own colors. Eveyone would have their own set of glasses to wear so they could watch me make there peice. Next day they would come and pick it up.

Also I'm a girl.....so thats just how we rolll!!! :D

Thank you very much. I had to raise the bench top a little to keep my back straight. The best part o the bench is the location. I am in a shop with 20+ great folks who keep me pushing my limits. If any of you went to the DFO you might recognize the spot. I love this place!
