I think the facebook 'like' button might do well here. im thinking of all the threads with tips and tutorials. I just read about adding horns. I read a bunch of two sentence thoughts, then got to a great piece of advice. I know you are using the stars to rate the overall thread, but within a thread of 5-20 pages, relocating something isnt the easiest even with key words sometimes. if in the main page of each category you had some 'likes' advertised (maybe even as links) then I could pop right to the most valuable info on the page as was chosen by others. the more people that like it the better the advice. or at least I can scroll through faster looking for what is "liked". maybe it could be signified by a red or yellow ribbon directly clickable on the post. Im just thinking bright something so it pops out on the page.

as a side note, some of you weirdoes say some pretty funny crap

that I'd like to acknowledge without having to quote then post.

Personally i like the rep style point system that is already in use on the site.

But as long as a "like" button doesnt have anything to do with FB i cant see how it would hurt.

Also you can subscribe to threads with really useful info so you can quickly refer to them from your user control page.

I agree it would be nice to have another way to highlight quality posts. Rep is good, but it's not public (so other people can't use it to find great posts) and making your own post quoting something isn't quite the same (and the overall thread star rating system I think gets used as a joke as much as for actual good threads!).

Like buttons mainly serve to get publicity on Facebook by showing up on there, so I'm not sure if that would help with our own site organization. I doubt if using FB particularly would be popular here, since while many members have accounts there, many don't like FB very much. Then, having Like buttons means running Facebook code on every page, which is a privacy issue.

Some forums use a thread highlighting system, where people can rate posts they consider helpful, or mods can highlight specific posts. Other places handle that by setting it up so members can vote up good posts and articles, and each post has a numeric score that you can sort threads by.

Good suggestions and line of thinking, thanks for posting your thoughts on this. The staff is definitely taking a look at new ways to improve the forum.

this is more in line with what I was thinking. I dont mean to incorporate FB or anything of the sort. we dont even have to use the word 'like' we can use something like: torch worthy, helpful hint, glasstastic, or bacon. yeah, my post got a hundred bacon hits! must be some good info!

I like that the rep system offers some credibility to the members, site and posts. but, I've been on a torch for three years, just cause I have to little blue squares doesn't mean I can't have a decent tip here or there.

im just talking about something that sticks out and catches my eye as im scrolling through posts. maybe there is one perfect post about how to say, pull points or lay lines for an encasement or make a sandwich. if no one comments on it or quotes it, then how do I know that that is the preferred way everyone is doing something?

its just that this site seems so be moving into the realm of a boro encyclopedia (just came up with a new name: boropedia. . . . thank me later) and more ways to acces quality info can only help. instant, one-click, easy feedback would be a plus I think.

I'm pretty "whatever" about this idea, but you kinda lost me with this:

I'm not a fan of that part.

Also, while I can see the appeal of particularly helpful info jumping off the page and into your eyeballs, I'm not getting the logistics of the whole "like" system. What's to differentiate between one person "liking" it and a hundred? Keep track with a counter? I'd rather not see this place become a "glass reddit," where users are posting just to watch the numbers next to their posts climb.

And as far as the boro-pedia thing goes; you know we have a wiki, right? And a search engine?

EDIT: Something I thought about in the past (but probably never mentioned):

On each user's control panel is a list of all the posts of theirs that have been repped. That's nice and all, but it would be more useful (and maybe alleviate this "like" issue as well) if you could also see a list of all the posts you've repped.

well the other hope is that people with spare time if they can , will throw good info into the wiki, the wiki would be a much easier way to keep track of good info. of course crediting the source is always helpful.

the like and dislike would lead to even more conusing issues while you can distill these things into a wiki post.

Well, in facebook's defense (and it pains me to write that phrase), after you 'like' a page you are free to comment on it utilizing the full range of words in your vocabulary.

Though sometimes it can give you access to a page - the majority of the time it is used as a substitute for any kind of dialect; it's completely primordial.

Imagine if the button didn't exist at all. Would you see 10 comments on picture that say "like"?

Well, the entire range of non-verbal communication is unavailable in this medium. The 'like' button isn't that different than the voting arrows at Reddit or similar sites - or even a Rep here with no comment. It's a bland way of showing general approval.

Facebook's 'poke' thing? Now that's weird.
