well i tried the solid rod reversal the other night and it cam out good xcept for the 1 spot i jacked it up, when merging the lense i taged a lil spot then pulled i was like Fook so i jsut stuck it together and ended up with the bubble that looks like a crack..

other than that i kinda liked it, and not too labor intensive..

i think i have been doing my blo ins a bit diff than others,

I have a blank of 50x 2.5 on a punty no blo tube, then i poke 2 holes in the end by punty with my tungsten, to let the air out. then i blow it in and start melting it down, I get color right up to the edge of the blank and just rip the blo tube off from the blo in, and melt it down like a reg ISO and once i close the mouth piece down i hook a blo tube on and pull the punty end off, and it cleans up nicley..,

So lats night I thought i was makin a awesome reversal piece, It looked great in the flame, but now that its out of the kiln its like a ghost pattern can only see it a bit in the sun, the camera flash is all that makes it seen.. bummed,

and a pink coated with a lil disco then blew in, not to bad but i still get brown spots on my disco probably from over heating it..

Tried to make a honeycomb cane last night, dont think i fumed the rods enuf, it didnt come out good, tried it in the pendant on right and cant hardly see it..

Not bad mang. I hate silver seeweed for blowins tho. Try some irrid or other striking color that have a small amount of silver, momka silver iris is cool. With the schott its easy to get some awersome effects by striking.

Hey crip hows the Knight burner treating you? Have you tried using your stick stack tool on the Knight? I was thinking about taking some clear rod lay side by side grab them up with a chip bag clip and fume one side gold and one side silver then roll them around randomly and fume again them do a stick stack of clear in clear to get the hand of heating and pulling down such a mass. that way its cheap practice. then when I start getting good results switch to a slightly smaller color stack. Also wondering about a web site for my flooring biz not real soon but I think your the man to talk to and I would much rather have you take care of it so I don't have too!

Ya thx guys 1st try swampy, i just blew a hole in the side of my 5 in tube and reamed the hole open , then stuck that sucker in there and melted it all in, got a lil over the top and messed it up a bit but im sure the next one will be better.. I made a clear one tonight with a clear n fume neck I think it came out good well see.

so I was stoked 27 min for the clear n fume, 44 min for the blo in, and 29 min for the wrapn rake?? dont know why it took longer maybe just to melt it all in..

i've been doing mad inside millies (murrine) too! rock. i open up the tube and put them inside with a cold seal on the back of the millie.

Me too Crip I been playing around with fume too, wikid organic kind of patterns.

I only have silver, I don't have gold.

I tried melting one of the posts of Terry's earrings but it was probly just 14 carat, doesn't hardly do anything, must be a lot of other base metals and filler in there.

So where could I score a suitable piece of gold, that's what I'm asking.

a coin store you can get gold, also buying gold wire works..., just make sure that it's either 22 or 24 carat. They both work differently so make sure you learn/ask how to use what carat you buy.

looking good crip. one suggestion is on the window pipes blow out your reversal ball so its not so thick. that could also be why it cracked. you have some good ideas and your shaping is getting much better. il have to say my favorite one is the frit with milli, it looks cool. glad to see ya still working hard.

reversals are a bitch to get right but its rewarding as balls to get them right

since youve been so down with fume lately

id recommend making a tube of fume clear lines and using that for reversals

its a good way to conserve color and get reversals in

also

i see that your clear dots on the side of your bowls are getting bubbly
i was having the same problem but if you make the gather a little slower
and pull it off in the back flame

they come out crystal clear and more of a magnifier

I over cooked the red tube where i hooked the lense and pushed bowl so it looks like livery shit but not to bad.. the rest i just kiln struck for bout 20 min, might have been too long i wanted it a lil more transparent on the red but most was sweet just not the livery spots..

more fume and a few hotrods, you guys ever use hot rods for burnin, they work great and you can taste all the goodness in your tobacco heheh

as for the bubbles ya thats just me using dirty rod off bench and not being patient heheh I could make it bubbleless but sometimes i just say fook it cuz itll still sell

oh ya and io did a nother frit n mili, it cracked on me 3 times but i managed to pull it off, the last crack happened while i was bout to put it in kiln so i got it back together without a blo tube kinda like magic..

i use the acme yellow n purple frit on the last one and the acme emerald flash on this one, it woulda stayed more green if i didnt have to fix all the cracks n get her to hot

heat with a butane lighter, or on the stove, or anything that gets hot... then heat up your tobacco, or legal herbal blend with the heated glass. It's so you don't get any nasty lighter fluid taste...

your head pressure is already at 250, it's gonna vent. this tells me either the head regulator is set to 250, OR your pressure builder is open? close the pressure builder, you shouldn't need it except sometimes when you first get the dewar just to get oxy flowing.

i could be wrong, but i think this is your head regulator. look closely, it might be labeled. your dewar looks pretty rusted and beat up so chances are it's not going to be clear. you turn that nut to adjust it.

unfortunately i don't remember which way to turn it, hopefully someone else can chime in with which direction to turn it. on nice new dewars that bolt is labeled 100 150 200 250 etc etc and you just turn it to the pressure you want.

i don't use liquid any more so i can't run in the garage and check for you, i hope it's labeled in some way. has it vented yet?

Ya it was venting a lil yesterday just slight hiss, teh reg you marked is the one that was iced over last night, i havnt used the pressure builder yet and it is off,

so Im going to go open the vent and let pressure off losen the screw and turn builder back on and if it doesnt go over around 100 where ill want it set i should be good?/

its a 230# vent so it showing 250 is a lil odd but it has never gone over that, was holding around 200 when wrkn last night..

Im gona go try now I will be back with results..

Dewars come in 160L (Liters) 180L and 230L. Usually 230L come on wheels, and they're short and fat. Those are the best ones IMO.

160 and 180 are usually 250psi dewars, they vent at 250. 230L doesn't vent until 350psi.

I'm not sure how to set your head regulator. Turn it a few times around and see if you notice any numbers. It will either stay where it is, constantly increasing pressure to 250 then venting, or it should go down. It's not a fast process though, if you set it right, it could take a few days to drop internal pressure.

When it does vent, it will come out one of those two little things connected to the internal pressure guage. You may even notice one labeled "250psi vent" or something like that. If the head regulator or pressure builder are covered in ice, that means they're open and flowing!

That's a really beat up dewar, maybe ask if you can get one in better shape next time. Once you get the head regulator figured out you'll be set for a while, thats a lotta o2!!!!!!

Also, no need to vent off oxy, just get to work ;)

Ok so I vented it down to like 180, took like 5 or 6 min just blastin oxy out so i decided to stop..

ok so now i have that screw backed out bout 3 turns,

ok so now when i run oxy thru the torch reg that reg you have circled ices over really quick bout 3 min and it was startin to ice..

and another possibally bad thing is when i turn the PB knob its like its stripped i can tighten it almost gets tight then loose again.. so hoping its closed and i wont have to mess with it ..

well see in a few hrs after i work for a while, if the pressure doesnt go back up over 200 Ill guess that was the right screw to adjust,

the other reg is actually hooked to the puressure builder vlave but its not getting cold or really doin anything as far as i can tell, so i havnt touched that screw..

and ya its venting out the lil round guy on the gauge part..

so the only thing im wondering now is if thats the right one that i adjusted, its the only one that ices up when in use..

The one nerd circled in red is the right reg to adjust. You need to turn it out more than three times, doesnt need to go all the way.

I think i got it.. im out bout a 1/4 inch from where it came, and i been out for bout 3 hrs of blown and its down round 170 now.. welll see what happens later..

and i noticed the reg there isnt icing up as much when the pressure is lower.. at 240 psi it iced in miniutes at the lower 170 i was just wet after an hour or so..

So last night was sweet my hommie came over and we set up the other bench, so now we got 2 spots burnin, we colabed a piece i made the combs and he coiled up the disco yak, the i put it together and he finished off the holes, and we got a crack so it jacked but still looks ok,,

we even pulled our 1st stack on my torch worked great got enuf to make like 12 sections.. we figured out its to much work for me to pull a stack i just cant physically do it, so itll be nice to have my buddy pull me some tube and i can just twist it up..

he was stoked cuz he hadnt done it so easy ever, he runns a minor and said its not even as hot as my torch so now he can pull stack on my torch and i get to use the tube , perfect.. hes kinda pissed but happy at the same time, cuz he has been using the same torch for 7 yrs now after trying the bigger one hes hooked;.

i made a 5 section piece but it cracked when i was close to done, it fell off the blo tube, tabled it like 3 times so i might just plug the holes and re work it.

but i actually got good sections and poped the holes in the right spots so i was happy, next time it will be cleaner, got a lil bubble junk in the wends on some joints from the yellow..

but now its on got a part time partner that is better than me..

we made 2 more tube pulls last night, I fumed and clear lined a 1 1/2 inch piece then sleved it and that lil chunk came out to a nice thick piece, ,

i spent way to many hours making this last night and its not that good but, not bad for me either, but i burned the shit outa the dichro so its all grey just a few color spots..

The dichro doesn't look too bad. If you throw another layer of clear over it usually that helps out a ton for the burning issues.

kind of an obvious statement, but when you pull dichro, the protecting layer of clear gets thinned out as well. There is also a very significant difference between high quality dichro from DA and stuff like dichro scrap.

Well it wasnt on outer layer,and it wasnt scrap it was a inch by 6 slab, it was laid on black tube cleared over, then lined with some red n white, and encased so I was just roastin the crap outa it.. it was plenty deep under clear

I beg to differ His buddy used same pull to make a piece the burnout happened during his re-ball making and shaping. Once you get good dicro prep made. The next phase of learning is to use said prep. Crip as you already know dicro is a pay to play learning exp but you are one step closer.

Did you use china black as a base? I have been using china blue or coil built jet as my base I cant seem to beat up on the black tube like I can the other colors.

ya it was the china black tube it cracked a few times while linin it up, but got em all healed up before it was encased..

i used jet black for my coils that i hooked the balls to, just the black tube for the pull,

the other one was a straight stick stack no tube under the color..

I was at a buddy's house and watched them do a bub out of the 38 black I won and it was sweet. They were using silver nitrate then sleeved. Next morning it was in like 5-6 pieces. I heard garaging at a lower temp then ramp to 1050 once at the end. I made quite a few end caps and single section pieces with the black. All in all I am stoked to have it I just think it take's practice just like everything else. I hope you go to Agi crip. There will be a few new faces this year if everybody that say's there going is able to get tickets.

holly crap ya what, i just noticed that the spiral sections with the dichro are the only places i got a few lil cracks, and thoes were the only places with china black in it, the white blue black tube was jetblack snowhite n blue amber purp,, and the coiled color was jetblack no cracks on any of that...

I hope that would be sweet, I been savin for months so i can go to Revere for the next class that i won, its almost time nov 10,

so get that one done 1st, then hopfully make some more money to go to AGI

Nice progression Skillz.....i personally like to sleeve the dichro tube pulls again before the reball processs. makes it a bit easier. Also the sargents are infamous for reducing <imo>.

the way i learned to do them was without actually doing a retti

you draw on the spirals and then fill in the gaps

it makes it so the color is all a similar thickness

by open ended tube i just mean like the end of a tube that just has a cut opening

with no change in diameter

that also tones down the inside out effect that can keep fillas from looking really clean

the mibs are all flat bottom cuz im gona be using em for wine stoppers.

but the backs are comming out better than the fronts, wrong color combo on the dots woulda been better off with clear..

I have been using the china black quite a bit lately I just stopped doing complex stuff and try to apply stuff then melt in then shape and attach extras. I also don't use it for any prep as in tube pulls implosions or any thing that adds extra warm up and cool downs. As long as I keep it simple and work quick without alot of re-heats its decent stuff. I work it with unob on lockness horns and carbs. I would almost bet you lined that black and yellow tube as a tube pull melted it in and pulled two bowls of of it or more. Also I make black stuff at the end of the day, sitting in the kiln all day at 1050 or higher depending on where it sits in there and how it warms up and down. good luck

Nice Crip! Yeah that black tube is sketchy as hell,out of 4ft. I got 1 little goblet & a big pile of broken shards. I definatly wouldn't weld any patterns to it or do multi section stuff,it worked well for a straight black goblet though,I guess it works well for anything simple that doesn't lots of need re-heating & welding? Hopefully NS comes out with some jet black soon,for now you can just stick stack black rods,I've done that with good results,except you get some faint lines.

JR the black was a lined with yellow then 8 mil rod encased, It was a thick monster my buddy wanted thick, only pulled one piece off it 4 inch blank..

all seemed well till the next morning my buddy was there to pick it up and we went out to the shop..

and the kiln was still on -- so it sat in there all day till i was finished with the rest of the days stuff, then anealed again,, probably a bad deal..

made a few more cool combs tonight, check em tomorrow..

Yep I figured it would be one of the two. I had a little problem with it at first but once I found out how I could successfully work it I took it from there. I had a request for the bumble bee look and just went with jet and canary. I love your ap and fume also. Keep it up it looks good. I like to fume the black then dot up with trans colors like sublime or Ice blue or any transparent you have laying around from sample sets and such also a little gold fume then the dots or lines. Try making your black tube stuff last and run your program.

It really helps to sleeve the black tube with 50x5 and pull it down like a tube pull. It really helps with the cracking problems

Hey crip I know you prob know about doing a sleeve they are really breezy easy if you follow a few steps. I will go threw the steps I use.Even if it is something you know it might help others. Your thread is the holy grail for most newbs on the forum. I know when I found it it was a couple of hrs a day read for a week. I really soaked it in.

First thing I like to do is make a collar for the tube out of clear the same size, Just like a stick stack collar.

Then attach the collar to the black and add three dots 10mil back from the black.

Then I Pull a point out of my sleeve tube and make sure its longer than the black tube by a inch or so.
At this time pop them in the kiln for 10-15 min a good soak always helps with cracking esp with china tube.

Then pull out parts drop sleeve over the black tube and hit the dots with a tight flame so they attach to the clear sleeve, this is your bridge and for me is essential in getting a good even clean sleeve.

Next up is melting off your point handle to get the melt going and I like to try and just do about a inch at first and make it even then attach a 10 mill rod and start working back to the dots.

Take it nice and even and try to keep the dot/collar end up and the rod end low work in one inch at a time and marver in.

This info has all been learned threw forum. I know you already have read this info but I nailed my first and second attempt at this method with no bubbles then tried to rush it melting in fast after reading a bunch of stick stack threads that say rage it! and a good solid tube sleeve is more about melting it in even so the air move's out and sometimes if you rage it tell its all over the place you tag a spot. and them freak out I know I did and thats the only ones I have failed. Even my failed ones have had usable section so its a win for me!

hey 331, it sounds like you might be getting your glass too hot for the silver to stick. also ive found that moderating the temperature of the silver is crucial too. i like to dip my silver into a small reducing (low oxy) flame, it starts to spark, then i remove it for a second or two (keeping my object to be fumed upstream always) and then i dip it back in the flame. for some reason it seems to fume best when the silver is heating up rather than when it is really hot, and you also avoid oversaturating the piece by fuming it slower.

ck - play around with a bunch of shit. I was going to town on the w/r's and now I'm getting bored with those. Switching up to blow ins for a little bit. You'll find too that the more you switch around, the more you start to pick up on the little tricks. You'll be able to see where you can incorporate some of those little move into another application. Start to see the big picture so to speak. Not trying to preach, just don't limit yourself.

Yep the red is kinda cool I picked some up and always try to work it at the end of the day ,the less its worked and the less its kiln really helps it from getting really dark.

is that like regular red tubing you used? is it like a Elvis red tubing cause i thought it came almost transparent red...

if i was you and the red was going to turn out like that i'd mix some white or somethin in there and pull your own tubing. that red and white with reversals and whatnot would look wicked.

ya dont make my own tube much but i need to start, , I just dont have the right tube for stacks right now, gota wait till next order..

its red starts trans yellowish.. finishes ugly sometimes, looks better with a bit of fume over the top so i think ill try that later ..

made a few things last night,, fumed mIB came out tight. but didnt photo good, the pendant came out good too I think..

and I also did a tube pull last night and bender backs finally clicked and worked perfect 3 times in a row couldnt believe it,, i think a lil thicker tube made the diff..

I am ready to make somethin awesome, If I can get it to come out, I think i might use a blue amber purp to connect sections.

well see if I jack it up tomorrow..

just had a shit ass time today, grabbed a hot blo tube and proceeded to jack up everything i touched..

I got my can together and thats all thats done,

i jacked up the mouth piece wag it was way to big once i sheilded it so i turned it into a pipe,

coild on a bowl and mouth piece and it was actually lookin pretty tight except it was pink.. and sliped out of my tongs bout 3 inches from the kiln and hit the floor..

so im done wastin time tonight nothing good will come of it..

ya once I quite pulling my tubing so thin it clicked for me too! Its a good feeling when it comes together. I am kinda at that same place I can now pull decent tube after I did everything possible wrong. Also I have been making two piece hammers and sherlys trying to get the welds smooth before moving up to 3-5 sections as I get pissy when things go bad. Nice stuff Crip way to bust it out.

Loving that heater crip, the glass is pretty sweet too. After getting a sub panel out in the garage, I got a little space heater that I blow up under my stool to keep the seat and my legs warm. I'm loving it about now - fackin' cold out with a big storm on the way.

I havnt really tried it for more than 5 min today.. had to do some modifacation to the base and actually mount it thru my bench so it wouldnt be so tall,, got it all hooked today then my buddy took me shootin,,

so Im getting ready to go out and rip it if i ever get off this computer..

Be careful with that propane heater. I'm pretty sure those unvented heaters kick off carbon dioxide and, more importantly, carbon monoxide, which can kill you. I do not think they are supposed to be used indoors.

ya it says not to, but i have the shop door open an big fan exausting an its in line between door and exaust,,

but it did go crazy lastnight , to full of a propane tank was makin it do the dragon fire like every 20 sec..frozen regulator and jet .. like serious 5 6 ft flames

my propane guy some how stuffed 3.5 gals into one of those half size bbq tanks,,

btw, i work in an unheated shop as well. i also live in MA and hate the cold. The best thing i found to keep me warm, outside of proper clothing, are heating pads; basically small electric blankets you can put on your chair. It was about 10-15F last night and it wasn't unbearable by any means. I was lazy an wanted instant gratification so i paid more than i should have at CVS ($30 each for the best ones which come with a stretch strap so you can secure them to your chair), but i'm sure you could get them for probably 1/2 that online. I would have just bought a chair with integrated heaters, but I couldn't find one that didn't also have massagers built in (which are wicked uncomfortable if you don't spend over 1k on a chair)

Also, not having a big draft helps quite a bit. It's been heaven since I finally got a proper ventalation system with hood in place so I don't have to have all the windows and fans going. just one window opened enough for intake does the job.

I've gotta get one of those propane heaters too man,I work in a shed & the breaker pops when I have the kiln & electric heater we have on at the same time,sucks too many amps. So I 've been freezin' balls too man in my shed,I think we live in a similar climate,cool ass, foggy,chilly nights & it feels way colder than it is?
Works lookin' sweet too,I really like the fume pendant, the milli marble & those new spoons.

GP most all my spoons are over 5 inch n a lil thick , i always start with a at least a 5 inch slug 26 x4 32 x4 or iso 50 x2.5 or 42 x 3.2 or some thin like that..

It got wonk on me cuz it was to big and my fire was to big n hot and it jsut got away from me hehe ,

this new torch is killin me so frickin hot workin around it need longer punties, dont really know how far i can turn it down safley without damaging the torch, so im still playin with it.. but i did get some kevlar sleves they are helpin

some crap from teh other night way to much fume on top, the other should look cool filled its got 3 an 4 layers in spots all dif fume for layer, but a mess put on but should still look cool when colored.. i hope hehe

the other one wasa english ivy spun on then raked tight, didnt get any greens out of it but a lot of other colors, and the comb doesnt look good with english i must not have burnt off enuf haze, , i just couldn't it was so thick..

Remeber to heat it up and make a moil for it. I think that is what they call it. It is a couple of wraps of 8-10 mill around the blow tube. That helps hold the heat on the connection.
